Course Description Pre-Algebra (8th grade math) is an introduction to Algebra. Pre-Algebra will strengthen students understanding of properties and principals that allow them a deeper understanding of Algebraic foundations. Modifications and accommodations will be made as needed. Course Objectives The following units will be covered in Pre-Algebra: Real Numbers, Exponents, Proportions/Similarity, Percents, Area/Volume, Expression, Linear Equations and Inequalities with Rational numbers, Geometry/Spatial Reasoning, Statistics, Probability, and Systems of Linear Equations. Materials/Supplies Text Book: Pre-Algebra math book: MathConnects, Course 3. There will be a class set of text books for student use during class time. Supplies: Students will be provided with a spiral notebook for their ISN (Interactive Student Notebook). Each student, on a daily basis, will need: additional lined paper, a simple 2 pocket folder, and pencils with erasers, a scientific calculator (optional), as well as a dry erase marker (optional). Classroom sets of markers, colored pencils, and glue will be also be provided. Students are permitted to bring in their own personal supplies if they wish. Progress Reports
Progress reports are available upon request or can be viewed through Power Schools.

PowerSchools Access Information


Parents/Guardians that do not have a login code for their child, they can get one at the front office. An I.D. will be required to receive your password. The PowerSchools site allows parents/guardians and students to access the students grades, attendance, and other information. The web address is: http://ps.dvusd.org/public/

Grading Policy 8th grade math department follows Standards Based Grading guidelines: 50% Assessments 50% Practice/classwork/ISNs Each unit will have multiple learning objectives. Each learning objective will be a section on the unit test. Each of these sections will result in an individual grade in the grade book. Students will have the opportunity to re-take their assessments for mastery. In order to be eligible for assessment retakes, students must have completed all homework/practice for that specific unit. Students will have class time to practice skills/concepts being taught.

Attendance and Make-Up Work Policy Students will have the amount of days absent plus 1 to turn in all missed work. Students can access the math department website, their coversheets, as well as agendas for daily work they are missing. If you anticipate being gone for a long length of time, please contact me for arrangements to be made regarding class work. Classroom Procedures The 5 Ps are expected by all 8th grade math teachers: Positive: have a positive attitude and be prepared to work! Prepared: have ISN, pencils, completed work and any needed materials. Prompt: be on time, we have a lot to do, and we want you to be here! Purposeful: come ready to open your mid and persevere in understanding and applying math! Polite: give and receive respect, speaker courtesy is expected. Teacher Tutoring Times or Extra Opportunity Buses are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. The bus pickup is at 4:15. I am available for extension of learning by appointment and student need. Communication Please contact me for any student concerns. Please refer to math website for all information needed for this course. Classroom Behavior Expectations All students will be expected to be present for learning unless absent. All student behavior concerns will be handled on an individual basis depending on behavior issue. The DVMS staff will be consistent, fair and provide proper consequences as per school procedures and protocol.
