Nekudos Slide: Teaching Letter/Nekuda Blends

Grade Level: Early Childhood, Special Education Description: Glide the Alef - Bais teddy down the slide into the nekuda sandbox to practice letter/nekuda blends. An excellent means of teaching this challenging kriya skill utilizing visual and kinesthetic mediums! Available as a non-editable PDF only. Goals/Objectives: Students will practice reading letter-nekuda blends. Materials Needed: 11x17 printout of slide 8.5x11 printout of sandbox Brown cardstock Round aleph bais stickers 52 Googly eyes Teddy bear template Nekudos printouts Material Preparation: 1. Print and laminate the slide and sandbox. 2. Using a die-cut machine or the teddy bear template, cut 26 teddy bears. 3. Glue two googly eyes to each teddy bear. 4. Place an aleph bais sticker on the teddys tummy. 5. Print the nekudos on small cards. 6. Place a nekuda in the sandbox and place the sandbox near the slide. Instructions: 1. Place a teddy bear at the top of the slide. 2. Slide the teddy down the slide, saying the sound of the letter on his tummy. a. For example: , mmmmmm. 3. When you reach the sandbox, say the sound of the nekuda. a. For example: kamatz, uh. b. Together the bear and the nekuda will say mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - uh

4. Continue with different letters and nekudos. Allow the student to say the sounds together with the teacher and then alone. Variations: The slide and sandbox can also be drawn on the board instead of printing the attached photos. When your students are ready to learn Ois Nekuda/Ois (letter vowel/letter) blends, place a letter with a nekuda (ex. Kumatz Mem) on the bears tummy and a letter (ex. Gimmel) in the sandbox. Have the bear slide down, mmmmuuuu, g. Lets say that together faster - mug. Next move on to Ois Nekuda/Ois Nekuda (letter vowel/letter vowel) blends. Place a letter and nekuda on two different teddys tummies. Place one teddy in the sandbox and slide one down the slide. For example: aaaaaa bu Additional Tips: Start with letters whose sounds can be elongated such as hey, vav, and zayin. Once the students understand the concept well, move on to the letters whose sounds can not be elongated such as beis, gimmel, and dalet.
