QUIET BOOK INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions are in three parts: 1) quiet book prep, 2) 12-individual quiet book activity page
instructions, and 3) putting together your quiet book.

Quiet Book Prep

Materials List:

1 yard 45” muslin

1 ¾ fusible interfacing (medium weight)
Wonder-Under
Felt in the following colors (black, red, green, yellow, blue, pink, purple)
One 6 to 8 inch zipper
3 buttons (shank preferred)
Lace or string for “Lace the Football” and the “Phone”
6 snap sets
Velcro (11 small pieces)
Poly-fill (just a handful)
Printed cotton scraps of choice
Batting and cotton fabric (for book cover)

Make the pages:

• Cut 6 - 10”x15” rectangles of fusible interfacing. When you buy interfacing off the bolt it comes 20 inches
wide, so divide that in half and you have your 10 inch sides. (The quiet book’s dimensions were
specifically designed to use your interfacing efficiently.) There will be remaining interfacing, which will be
needed for the actual activity pages.
• Cut 6 – 10 ½” x 15 ½“ rectangles of muslin. Using a warm iron, fuse muslin to interfacing (the larger size
of muslin allows for some give on covering your interfacing. Once fused, trim down to interfacing size of
10”x15”).
• Now you have your canvases to create two activity pages per sheet for a total of 12 activity pages. Crease
down the middle as a guide when laying out your pages. Be sure to allow a ¾ inch seam allowance (dead
zone) around the canvas when laying out your activity pages.

* Tip: Since this is a very large project, it may be less overwhelming to do two activity pages (one canvas) at
a time. There is no designated order for the activity pages# just choose two that you would like to work
on. For example, our church women will be meeting once a month to work on 2 pages at a time.

Quiet Book Activity Page Instructions

No particular order is required. If working in a group, I recommend choosing two simple pages to start with.
(For example, “The Traffic Light” and “Mitten”)

Many of the instructions give you the option of sewing or fusing with Wonder-Under. However, some sewing
is unavoidable.

A GOOD pair of scissors will make all the difference in the world. I highly recommend Gingher Shears (I
love my 8” Knife Edge Dressmakers Shears).

For the “Snap Me on My Shapes” page, I used my Industrial Snap Press, which uses polyacetal snaps (size
20). All purchased at www.verybaby.com. Feel free to use sew-on snaps if you don’t have access to an
industrial snap press.
 Putting Together Your Quiet Book

After you have completed your 12 activity pages, you will need to sew them into their “book” form.

• Begin by laying two of the completed 10”x15” canvas sheets right-sides together. Pin and sew around
entire page allowing ¼ to ½ inch seam allowance. Be sure to leave a 4 inch opening on the bottom so you
can turn your pages right-side out.

• Snip the corners. Turn right-side out and crisp the corners and edges. Press with a warm iron.

• Top-stitch around the entire page. (Stitch close enough to the edge to close off the openingE otherwise
you’ll have to hand stitch it closed).

• Repeat for remaining pages so you have 3 sewn pages. Stack your pages and baste stitch down the
middle.

Make a Book Cover:

• At this point, you could just cut a rectangle out of felt and stitch your pages down the middle and be done
with it. However, since you worked so dang hard, wouldn’t it be nice to finish it off with a bang? Here’s
what I suggest:

• Cut two 11 ½” x 17 ½“ rectangles of printed cotton and one (or two) layers of cotton batting. Lay the
printed cotton right-sides together and stack them on top of the batting. Pin and stitch around, leaving a 4-
inch opening. Snip corners, turn printed cottons right-side out, crisp corners and edges and press. Hand-
stitch opening closed, press and quilt as desired or leave as is. If you would like your book to close, add
ribbon to tie, or a tab and snap/button to close.

• Center the activity pages on the cover and stitch down the middle. (Use a long straight stitch or walking
foot if you have it).
