Tool life model Design of experiment approach (DOE) Experimental procedure Analysis in minitab software

Large number of tests have to be conducted in order to establish a relationship between tool life and the cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed and depth of cut. This study takes into account the simultaneous variation of the cutting parameters in order to determine the tool life.
3

The relationship between the tool life and the different parameters can be represented by the following equation :

V T D S
n x C

CONSTANT

Where ; Vc = cutting speed T = tool life D = depth of cut S = feed rate n and c are constants found by experimentation

DOE procedure has been used to systematically investigate process variables that influence the quality of products and cost. Its procedure consists of 4 steps : PLANNING : Definition of the problem and objective. SCREENING : reduction of variables by identifying the key variables. OPTIMIZATION : optimum values for different experimental factors. VERIFICATION : perform a follow up test to confirm the optimum values.

1) A work piece made of AISI 304 grade(04Cr18Ni1) steel was used. 2) Cutting parameters for the experiment :

3)Now standard Taylors tool life equation can be used to determine the tool life. 4) The value of tool life obtained is tabulated below :

The experimental data obtained is being inserted into minitab software and analysis of design is being done. Graphs are generated by the software which gives important results.

In this case experimental results demonstrate that the cutting speed and depth of cut are the main parameters that influence the tool life. It is clear that low depth of cut , low cutting speed and high feed rate are recommended for better tool life.
