UNIT of STUDY: Readers Build Good Habits MINI-LESSON TEACHING POINT: How to Buzz Effectively

CONNECT: (activate prior knowledge & focus student attention on lesson) Yesterday.. Today I am going to teach you. How to buzz effectively during turn & talk time TEACH: (demonstrate the teaching point as if you were working independently)Let me show you how I..would TURN AND TALK to my partner about the book/part we just read. (Teacher will choose a student to model with turning knee to knee and making eye contact. Talk in a low voice not to disturb other partnerships) After the model: How did you know we were effectively buzzing about the book? (Students will give examples for our Anchor Chart *eye contact *facing each other *listening and repeating *asking questions *maintaining focus) : (coach & assess students during this time) - Partner work, turn & talk ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT Now you are going to have a try. You are going to..turn to your partner and use the list we generated on the ANCHOR CHART to demonstrate that you know how to buzz effectively. (Teacher will rotate through partnerships listening/monitoring language and looking for on-task behavior)

Readers/writers, lets all come back together.I noticed _______ & ____________ (student names) doing LINK: (review & clarify key points, globalizing their utility from the now to the future) -Restate teaching a great job maintaining (use examples from Anchor Chart) point) Remember, when Buzzing effectively, you maintain eye contact, face your partner, listen, ask questions and maintain focused during Turn & Talk time.
