ENGINEERING RESPONSE TO TERRORIST HAZARD I would like to suggest a theme for future workshops / conferences / symposiums in which INAE

can do great service to the country. The theme, in a nutshell is: Engineering approach to Hardened Facilities and Built Environment Terrorism (and Vandalism) is a reality all over the world, India being no exception in this regard. While counteracting Terrorism (and Vandalism) is generally perceived to be primarily the responsibility of the military and police, engineers have a great responsibility in ensuring that infrastructure including buildings, monuments, bridges, power generation units and other facilities do not present soft targets or become sitting ducks awaiting disaster as a result of lack of human anticipation. Facilities and Infrastructure need to be hardened against sabotage from the modern day terrorists and vandals. What can Engineers do in this regard? The fight against this hazard, created by human beings, needs to be tackled at various levels. The approach must be different from Natural Disaster Mitigation. A multi-disciplinary approach is required to have an engineering response to this threat, where INAE can play a pivotal role.
