Willing to learn, driven by love and seeking new horizons for her family,
Maria Esther established herself in Tampa in 1990 along with her husband,
Francisco Obed Carrillo, a Christian, generous, loving and caring man and
father, and her partner in business. She was a mother to Maria Liliana (1991)
and Daniel Francisco (1993), while serving as a mother for many other
family members and friends as well as any group that she became close to.
She was a beautiful, Hispanic, hard working and joyous woman with
contagious energy—a creator of life. Social leader and a teacher that with
the help of creative individuals in Colombia and in the United States
accomplished the creation of the following organizations:
• Founded and managed the Festival for the Hispanic culture of Tampa
(2004)
Maria Esther was a generous leader, loyal to her moral principles and deeply
engaged in serving the community, a family leader, and church leader in the
Hispanic community, and a citizen of the world. She deeply believed in God.
As a Christian in the Menonite Church, she believed in giving as the
expression of faith in Christ. She believed in education and the cultures as
the bridge between human societies, in happiness as the glue in between
men, youth, and children of all colors and origins.
Maria Esther was intense in her daily life, focused and driven to achieve her
goals, was the example of a leader. She was a restless worker, and dreamer
of numerous projects to benefit people, with her main goal to serve all
human beings in our society, never looking for any monetary reward. She
exemplified the word of God that says “Is better to give than to receive” a
daily practice in her daily life with her family, church and community.
For her family she was the example of love and righteousness that generated
trust. She was eager to care for the ill and for the needs of other people in
good times and bad times, always serving with excellence, ethic and beauty.
Maria Esther was the enthusiastic example of a human being in her daily life.
She was passionate when serving others. She represented happiness and left
a print in our souls and dreams.
She died tragically in Miami, Florida on May 28, 2009, just footsteps away
from where her daughter Maria Liliana was going to receive a scholarship
that would help her start her college studies in Chemical Engineering at
Columbia University in New York.
For her great passion for life and her consistent way of thinking and acting,
there is no doubt that God gave us a beautiful gift in which we can emulate
the truth of Jesus preaching at Gethsemane. Her legacy is one that impacts
our lives forever and moves our convictions imposing the responsibility of a
future to be built with her ideas.
Like Professor Lono says “She is the wings beneath our wings”
