Sanitary Fair
The United States Sanitary Commission began holding Sanitary Fairs in New York in April 1862 for the purpose of providing lint, bandages, comforts and nice things for the wounded and sick. Up to January 1863, the gifts of the women of this country, as computed by the Secretary of the Commission, amounted to seven million dollars. As part of our living history program we will once again set up a model of the sanitary fairs that took place all over our nation. Departments of the fair that you should look for in August are: Childrens Toys and Games, Entertainments, Refreshments, Bazaar, Fine Arts, and Ancient Treasures. Note: We will be raffling a trunk and trousseau belonging to a china doll named Naomi Rosabelle.
