As we photographed one of this months projects, the homeowner turned his lens on me. A vintage camera collector and talented photographer, Christopher Michel shot me with a Leica M9.
enovations arent always about fixing whats wrong. I could move in to a stunning new house, decked out with the latest and greatest appliances and perfectly patinated reclaimed-wood floors, and yet I still wouldnt feel completely at home until I covered the bathroom, floor to ceiling, in my new favorite shade (charcoal) and hammered too many holes in the walls, attempting to hang my art just right. Having been an editor at this magazine for the past five years, I am approaching my new role with a similar philosophy. Homes are a deeply personal thing. The same goes for creating a magazine about them. With this issue, my hope is that youll not only learn a few new things about design, such as how best to use the hottest paint colors of the season (Hue & Improved, p. 46) and where a pair of underthe-radar furniture designers source their sought-after wood (The Drifters, p. 60), but youll also learn a thing or two about me. Not necessarily where I grew up (Cleveland) or how I take my tea (soy milk and agave), but what inspires me most about design. At the risk of giving it all away, I can tell you that Im constantly inspired by the personalities, individual styles and decorating dramas that go into creating the homes within our pages. This issue, its the Jules Verneobsessed tech magnate in San Francisco who asked designer Jon Staub to respect his love of robots and ray guns (Industrial Age, p. 120), and the Silver Lake couple who, after building their modern, minimalist dream house, realized that they actually had a thing for antiques and cluttered kitchen shelves (From House to Home, p. 100). Its the grocery bagger turned food blogger turned author who hosted a late-afternoon summer feast for us at his Long Beach loft (Happy Meals, p. 106), the SF designer who renovated a 100-year-old house so lovingly that he displays the original owners family photos as if they were his own (Second Time Around, p. 92), and the fabulous fashion stylist who kicked off the redesign of her Pacific Palisades home with a road trip through Floridas estate-sale country with her two best friends (A Little Help from Her Friends, p. 108). And when our senior editor Mary Jo Bowling came in to the office one day proclaiming, I have a crazy idea! and proceeded to show us photos that a local artist had taken of a falling-down house in Healdsburg, suggesting we put them in the issue because the owners who were restoring it by hand were such fascinating fellows (Rising from the Rubble, p. 116), I knew this new house of ours would start to feel like home in no time. Stark white against the mercurial skies of San Francisco, the Mashouf Performing Arts Center will be a dramatic addition to the San Francisco State University campus. The contemporary building will house five performance spaces, including a 1,200seat opera theater for large performances, and dozens of studios and classrooms for music, theater, dance and broadcast journalism. It was designed by Los Angeles Michael Maltzan Architecture, which is best known for projects as diverse as UCLAs Hammer Museum and Skid Row Housing Trusts New Carver Apartments. This building is meant to be a gateway, both physically and culturally, says Maltzan, who hopes the center will create connections among students, faculty and the community, as well as the arts themselves. Its not about being isolated anymore. The center was designed
so that students of different disciplines could collaborate and cross-pollinate to generate a more dynamic, creativity on campus, says project director Peter Erni. Situated on an awkward triangular lot at the southwestern corner of the university grounds, the 242,000-square-foot facility will be dominated by a box housing the opera theater and a long wavelike entry ramp lined with floor-to-ceiling glass. The Mashouf Performing Arts Center will cost a whopping $146 million, all of which is being funded by state bonds and private donations. The buildings namesake, Manny Mashouf, founder of the womens clothing brand Bebe (and an SFSU alum), donated $10 million to the university in 2005 for a new performing arts center. Construction is planned in three phases over nine years, and is set to begin in 2013. Macy Williams

The Editors: In the previous issue of California Home+Design (May/ June 2011), we covered the new Mashouf Performing Arts Center at San Francisco State University, and boy has it caused a stir with our readers at californiahomedesign.com. For some, the cost of the arts center ($146 million) is a little hard to swallow at a time when tuition prices at the university are skyrocketing. For others, the high price is justified by the beauty of the dramatic 242,000-square-foot facility. Below are a few of the responses. A new arts center when students cant even afford tuition! Brilliant! Bravo! Its privately funded, so it has nothing to do with tuition. Larger classes, higher fees, faculty layoffsthe list goes on. Whos in charge here, anyway? Does it occur to any of the critics here that maybe the people in the arts program are, in fact, ecstatic? If it were a gym or sports field, would you all complain? If these successful alums really wanted to contribute and give back, they could help renovate existing facilities and take some of the burden off the current students, whose fees are getting hiked each semester. I do not buy for a second that this money couldnt be better appropriated to improve existing structures or help soften the blow of budget cuts and fee hikes. If something in the CSU system doesnt change, and fast, the university wont have students who can afford to attend or professors left to teach in their new privately funded building.

Describe your dream kitchen in five words or less.
Stylist Emily Henson felt fortunate that she got to work with friendscookbook author Matt Armendariz and photographer Teri Lyn Fisheron her last photo shoot before moving to London (Happy Meals, p. 106). Ive worked with them many times, and theyve become great friends, says Henson. Working with Matt is almost too easy; he always has such great stuff. It doesnt take very much to pull it all together.

Los Angeles photographer Teri Lyn Fisher usually takes pictures of either food or interiors, so she was excited to combine the two for Happy Meals (p. 106). Everything looked so pretty, she says. Pretty party guests, pretty cocktails and amazing natural light from Matts loft. When not taking photos of food, Fisher likes to write about it on her aptly named blog, Fish Food. Im not a foodie, because I can get down with Twinkies, she says. Im more of a food enthusiast.
Lynn Kloythanomsup keeps a full schedule. The current editorial assistant for CH+D is also a stylist, photographer and writer. For this issue, her multitasking skills came in handy: She wrote about three bathrooms and even styled one for the shoot (The Whole Package, p. 78). Styling a bathroom was a challenge, says Kloythanomsup. I felt like I was playing a game of Twister, climbing all over the counter to block out reflections.

Photographer Drew Kelly shot two bathrooms (p. 78 and p. 86) and the house designed by Antonio Martins (Second Time Around, p. 92). I took beforeand-after pictures for Antonio, so it was fascinating to see the transformation, says Kelly, who lives in San Francisco. Recently, he has been photographing Bay Area chefs on their farms and in their kitchens. Theyre getting a lot of attention right now due to the focus on the slow-food movement, and deservedly so.

The La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ) held its annual Legends of La Cienega celebration from May 12 through 14, honoring their district, the design community at-large and the worlds most renowned fine artists. CH+D collaborated with Waterworks (8580 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood) to present one of the more popular events at La Cienegaa panel discussion moderated by executive editor Erin Feher called Sex Up Your Space. ASID Designers Challenge

On May 5, for the second sold-out year in a row, six teams from the American Society of Interior Designers wowed guests and fellow designers with their creative talents and ingenuity. According to the shows creator, Marie Chan, all teams were given 90 minutes to produce couture fashions using anything but a sewing machine. Materials such as fabrics, trims, tiles and wall coverings were randomly provided to each team minutes before the start of the challenge. Emcees Erin Feher, executive editor of CH+D, and Kevin Daroca of Design Mart Silicon Valley focused the audiences attention and kept the teams momentum unflagging. With the theme Whats Old is New Again in mind, SFMade threw its second annual Ramp It Up fundraising event on May 25 at McRoskey Mattress Companys San Francisco showroom (1687 Market Street). The standingroom-only event was part of SFMades factory tours highlighting San Franciscos interesting (and growing) list of locally manufactured products. McRoskey, maker of handcrafted custom mattresses and one of the citys oldest manufacturers, shared the evening with a host of newcomers to the manufacturing scene. Joe Ferriso and Jon Anzalone have made a business of beach-combing for scrap wood and giving it new life in their Richmond District workshop and gallery.

Joe Ferriso and Jon Anzalone had similar career paths: Both studied painting and took woodworking jobs to make money. Before making woodworking their vocation, Anzalone apprenticed with woodworker Peter Murkett and Ferriso worked in a frame shop (where he built boxes to display Martin Scorseses awards). After moving to San Francisco, they made it their day job and opened their studio.
or most woodworkers, projects begin with a trip to the lumberyard. But for Joe Ferriso and Jon Anzalone, the process begins at the edge of a beach or inside a Dumpster. The pair seeks out driftwood that has washed up on the shore near their San Francisco studio or scrap wood from building demolitions and then uses it to create contemporary furniture and lighting. For Ferriso and Anzalone, its not just the cost of these materials (free) or the ethics of the practice (reuse), its also the quality that draws them to the trash bin. Weve found that scrap wood is superior to materials you buy at the lumberyard, says Anzalone. Wood thats been recently harvested is grown quickly and is less stable. Lumber from old buildings comes from old-growth trees and is harder with a better grain. Once the wood is in their hands, its dried, planed and brought back to life. Although they generally have a design concept in mind, the shapes and colors of their finds inspire new directions. Theres a character in scrap wood, a sense of mystery, says Ferriso. It has saw and nail marks from a previous, often unknown, life. You never know what youll find underneath the old paint.

The design team often includes color in their work, such as a shot of green between the planks of a bench or blocks of red and yellow in a reclaimed-wood wall sculpture. At heart, Jon is a color theorist, says Ferriso.

Instead of sanding the patina and imperfections out of wood, Ferriso and Anzalone celebrate it. For their driftwood lamps, the material is smoothed by waves and water in ways that are impossible to replicate. Ferriso and Anzalone always have concepts in mind, but their work is influenced by the haul from their daily foraging trips. Every day we make a new discovery, says Ferriso.

hen it came to her personal kitchen, the biggest hurdle faced by architect Deborah Richmond of Los Angeles Touraine Richmond Architects was budget. In order to save money, we decided to take an inexpensive item and make it appear refined, she says. She chose Flakeboard, a building material made of compressed wood chips thats most often hidden under veneers. After sanding the Flakeboard and sealing it with polyurethane, Richmond had a material that was textured and interesting. Another humble material, white Formica, composes the backsplash and countertop. The kitchen forms one side of a freestanding cube within a large, open space. he kitchen was only 15 years old, but the materials were so dated it could have passed for 30, says Alison Davin of Jute Interior Design when describing her first look at this Tiburon space. Maple cabinets, green and red stucco walls and a speckled-granite tile countertop with yellowish grout combined to make the relatively young kitchen look elderly. Davin breathed new life into the room with a bright white-and-blue palette. We started with the Raoul fabric in the window treatment and worked backward from there, says Davin. The designer painted the existing cabinets and walls a pure white, installed new countertops (both gray Caesarstone and whiteand-gray marble) and added new hardware, appliances and fixtures to create a youthful look. e are anti everything, jokes designer Delta Wright, who, along with partner Elena Frampton, runs Curated, a Manhattan- and Santa Monicabased design firm. If not for Wrights ebullient demeanor, it might be easy to believe her, considering the duo decided to paint the entire kitchen in an otherwise white house with Benjamin Moores Wrought Iron (or, for the less shade-savvy, pretty darn black). The clients, God bless them, didnt think to say no, says Wright. But when we said we were painting the ceiling as well, they freaked. Wright and Frampton explained that they treated the entire room as a volume, so even though it was open to the living room, the kitchen should be a unified black box. They trusted us, so they relented, says Wright. The absence of the ubiquitous pendant lights over the bar is another example of how these women definitely dont like to go with the flow. A Clean Break
educe, reduce, reduce, was the directive given to architect Ian Read of Medium Plenty when renovating this Oakland kitchen. The cramped space had been the victim of a subpar remodel in the 1980s and, according to Read, sported crappy cabinets and a weird layout. The solution was to open up and simplify everything, from the walls (which received additional windows) to the doors (a svelte back door was replaced with wide glass sliders) to the casework (darkly painted, cluttered cabinets were traded for custom open shelving in unstained oak). The one exception to the clients less-is-more philosophy was thick Calcutta marble countertops. The clients found it and had to have it, says Read. hen Carlos Zubieta and Bill Bernstein of BZ Architects overhauled a 1940s ranch house in Encino Hills, their goal was to allow their clients to move seamlessly from the indoors to the outdoors. The kitchen, originally relegated to an isolated corner of the house, is now the central hinge of the property. It opens up to the pool area and amazing hilltop views, says Zubieta. The materials used in the kitchen, such as limestone countertops and terrazzo flooring, were selected to blend with the exterior materials and allow for stress-free living. nterior designer Ian Stallings has drawn inspiration from many sources, but never something as small as the Herms gift box that sparked the design of Reed Kingsleys bathroom. Kingsley, president of Brownstone Furniture Company, hired Stallings to remodel his San Francisco home in the style of a mens club. When it came time to do the bathroom, the vision of a tiny container gave the designer an idea. It seemed to me the bathroom should have the same feel as an Herms box: small, yet luxurious and elegant. Stallings blended traditional nickel-plated fixtures and modern glass tile for a look thats completely of the moment. But he also kept an eye on the future. When we were working on this project, Reed was a single man, he says. But I decided to create a space that would also work for a woman, in case he ever found the one. ne of the most common renovation requests that Tom McElroy of McElroy Architecture gets is to make a room larger. But when extra square footage cant be found, the San Francisco architect looks for other ways to create the illusion of more space. Faced with a dark and cramped Bernal Heights bathroom with no room to grow, McElroy created a wall of windows on an awkwardly shaped wall to draw in light and take advantage of once-hidden views. Though part of a larger renovation that included a redesigned master bedroom, the bathroom became the showpiece of the project. It would have blown the budget to relocate the bathroom, says McElroy. n otherwise demure oceanfront home in Pacific Palisades contains a surprise for adventurous explorers who investigate every room. Katie Leede of Los Angeles Digs by Katie turned a guest bathroom into a gathering place for exotic creatures. Without changing the existing layout, floors or surface materials, Leede gave the bath a dramatic new look by updating the cabinet paint and refinishing the wainscoting with a caramel-colored stain. But Leedes boldest move was papering the walls and vaulted ceiling with pages from Cabinet of Natural Curiosities (Taschen, 2001), a richly illustrated tome by 18th-century pharmacist Albertus Seba. Leede chose the 300-year-old hand-drawn images of creatures both real and imaginary for their whimsy as well as their ability to camouflage the awkward angles of the baths dormer window. he overcast blues of the water and the delicate pearly colors found within seashells were the inspiration for the tranquil palette of this master bathroom just a block away from San Francisco Bay. I envisioned it as a seaside retreat, says Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living, who created the bath as a much-needed getaway for the parents of four children. In addition to the coast-evoking colors, Triggs installed a herringbone tile floor to mimic waves and wainscoting aligned to reflect the horizon. With structural direction from Armour + Vokic Architecture, Triggs created a customized floorplan that allowed for a wall-hugging tub, a separate shower and a vanity. Instead of adding additional windows (neighbors are close and plentiful), Triggs installed a skylight to provide plenty of fog-filtered light. Lynn Kloythanomsup

Los Angeles just lost another parking lot. The formerly asphaltcovered corner of San Vicente Boulevard and Melrose Avenue is now home to the new West Hollywood Librarya 32,000-squarefoot, Silver LEEDcertified building designed by Johnson Favaro that is filled with far more than just books. The roomy new digs (the former 5,000-square-foot location a hundred yards away is slated for demolition in November) offer plenty of room for extras among the stacks, such as a career development center and a childrens theater modeled after Michelangelos Laurentian Library in Florence. The new librarys designwhich includes an elaborate flower-shaped, carved-bamboo coffered ceiling that spans the entire collections flooris timeless and, according to the architect, hard to categorize. The building is neither modern nor traditional; it neither waxes nostalgic about yesterday nor pretends to determine a future over which we have no control, says principal Jim Favaro. In addition to providing visual impact, the three-foot-deep coffers serve the practical purpose of screening the not-so-inspired sprinkler, audio and lighting systems. But the artistic undoubtedly outweighs the functional: A work by L.A. artist Shepard Fairey has been commissioned, and a whimsical sculpture by designer David Wiseman will be suspended above the main stairwell, making this a charmed place for bibliophiles to park themselves with a good book. Antonio Martins has an affinity for keeping options open and construction visible. This idea comes into play in the media room, where he stripped the upholstery fabric from a pair of Hans Wegner Papa Bear armchairs and left them covered in basic muslin. Im looking for the right fabric, Martins says. But until I find it, they look cool this way. Martins living room speaks many languages. The chaise is inspired by 17th-century Biedermeier designs from Germany. The photographs depict an African acacia tree harvest, and relate to the Kuba cloth pillow. oth Antonio Martins and this Victorian home were going through a tough time when Martins purchased it two years ago. He was dealing with the end of a relationship, and the house was suffering from years of neglect and the accumulation of a lifetimes worth of stuff. There were ceiling-high piles of security equipment and how-to homerepair manuals, as well as dozens of mail-order hair dryers, Martins recalls. Most of the people who looked at the house saw a mess. I saw potential. What the other would-be buyers missed were the mint-condition details: moldings (unsullied by layers of paint) as crisp as the day they had been installed 100 years earlier; ornate, original hardware and a gorgeous OKeefe & Merritt stove, circa 1948. As Martins uncovered the history of his new home, the process was as fascinating to him as it was therapeutic. Design has to have a story to give it meaning, says Martins. And I love the story of this house.

A room should reflect where a person is from, where theyve been and who they are, says Martins. His tale is of family, travel and craftsmanship. The steamer trunk was used by his grandmother when she left Brazil, the silver anklets on top of it are from India and the armchairs have no upholstery because he likes seeing how they are put together.

Martins wanted to create a separate environment for the master bedroom, so he painted it an intense red. It felt right to have one burst of color in the house, he says.

63 years of family meals

Ralph and Alva Neyhart purchased the home in 1906 and raised a family there (Martins bought the house after their youngest son, Roy, died at age 84). Alva had the OKeefe & Merritt stove installed in 1948, and her grandaughter remembers her using it to prepare family holiday feasts. It had been here so long, I had to keep it, says Martins, who had the piece completely restored. Today, he uses it to cook dishes such as Brazilian feijoada, the countrys national dish, using pigs feet, beef, beans and vegetables. Martins assembled artifacts left by the Neyharts (the family immigrated to San Francisco at the turn of the century) into a shadowbox. It is a treasure trove of lives gone by: photos, a 1929 map of Sonoma County, paper ice cream cups and bits of original wallpaper, tile and molding. If I ever sold this house, it would stay, he says. These things belong here.

When Martins couldnt find the right textural wallpaper for his guest room, he made his own. I bought yards of fabric and sent them to Proseal Plus, a company in Georgia that backs fabrics and turns them into wallpaper, he says.

The bathroom was run-down and filled with awkward angles. Martins retained the original moldings and painted them white (as he did throughout the home), hung a mirror from the ceiling (theres not enough space to mount it on the wall), turned a weathered vintage table into a vanity and added antique carriage lanterns for a chic, rustic look. Someday Ill wire the lanterns with electricity, he says. For now, I place candles in them when I want to add a little sparkle.

The narrow walkway to the backyard could be uninteresting and even grim, but Martins made it a small vertical garden by hanging his collections of Staghorn ferns and wooden machinery molds on the wall.

Open it Up
The open shelving system in the kitchen freed up space, money and time. The shelves are easily customizable and provide the illusion of more square footage. Campbell, an avid cook, says that its much easier to spot and grab ingredients on a shelf than to rifle through a cabinet.

Although Campbell still prefers meticulously curated spaces, the one room in the house where hes most clearly exorcised his inner minimalist is the kitchen. When the couple first built the house, a professional Wolf range was at the very top of their wish list. But once the pricey six-burner monolith was in place, there wasnt enough left in the budget for cabinetry. A trip to a restaurant-supply store provided what was supposed to be a temporary shelving system, but the open design proved so practical that it became permanent. I prefer a working kitchen, where things are utilitarian and less adorned, says Campbell, an accomplished home cook. I can appreciate purposeful clutter. The hard edges of the houses exterior have also been softened by a well-guided hand and some help from Mother Nature. The untreated exterior steel has reacted to years of rain and taken on a rich oxidized patina. Boston ivy has been allowed to take over the exterior stucco (pictured, right). Campbell especially loves the thorny dimension it creates when lying fallow in the winter months. And the once aggressively manicured backyard garden has been transformed into a bucolic sanctuary by luxuriant bamboo and soft, willowy grasses, proving that even the most modern house can mature into something more inviting.

m all about anything that gets us closer to purely enjoying food, says Matt Armendariz, food blogger (hundreds of thousands follow his gastronomic adventures at MattBites.com), photographer and newly minted cookbook author. For this midsummer party at the Long Beach loft he shares with his food-stylist husband, Adam Pearson, that means ditching the silverware in favor of skewers, toothpicks and even fingers. Eating with your hands brings a smile to your face, says Armendariz, who could be considered something of an expert on the subject: His new book, On a Stick! (Quirk, 2011), features 80 recipes for fun, finger-friendly food. Armendariz and Pearson hit the Santa Monica farmers market on Wednesdays and Sundays, and their menus are often planned around whatever bounty looks best. Most of our summer entertaining revolves around that market, says Armendariz, who chose a skewered panzanella salad, spicy chicken satay and grapefruitandSt-Germain cocktails for this lateafternoon feast. I definitely come alive in summertime.

Panzanella with Sherry Vinaigrette

Serves 4 1 loaf French bread, cut into 24 (1-inch) cubes 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp garlic powder 1/ 2 tsp salt Pinch of black pepper 24 cherry tomatoes 1 English cucumber, sliced into 1-inch pieces and quartered 24 small fresh mozzarella balls (ciliegine) 24 basil leaves 24 cocktail picks Sherry vinaigrette: 1/ 4 cup sherry vinegar 3/ 4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/ 2 shallot, finely chopped 1 1/2 tsp stone-ground mustard Sea salt to taste 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. Toss bread with oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Spread pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking time. 3. Meanwhile, make the vinaigrette: Whisk the sherry vinegar, 3/4 cup olive oil, shallot and mustard in a small bowl until fully incorporated. Season with salt to taste.

Chicken Satay with Peanut Dipping Sauce

Serves 4 8 bamboo skewers 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch cubes Chicken marinade: 1/ 3 cup sugar 1/ 2 cup dry-roasted peanuts 1/ 3 cup water 1/ 2 cup soy sauce 2 Tbsp ground turmeric 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1/ 2 stalk lemongrass, roughly chopped 2 Tbsp galangal, peeled and roughly chopped Peanut sauce: 1/ 4 cup vegetable oil 1/ 2 cup dry-roasted peanuts 2 kaffir lime leaves, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1 serrano chile, roughly chopped 2 Tbsp coconut milk 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1/ 4 cup water salt to taste 1 green onion, thinly sliced 1. Blend all of the marinade ingredients together until smooth. Reserve 1/4 cup of the marinade. 2. Pour the marinade over the chicken pieces, cover and refrigerate for 6 to 24 hours. 3. Soak skewers in water for about 30 minutes. 4. For the peanut sauce, heat oil in a saucepan on medium-high heat and saut peanuts, lime leaves, garlic
and serrano chile until fragrant, about 5 minutes. 5. Add the coconut milk and soy sauce and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. 6. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the water and reserved marinade and stir until fully incorporated. 7. Pour the mixture into a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Place the sauce back into the pan and simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. 8. Pour the peanut sauce into a bowl and top with the sliced green onion. Cover and set aside. 9. Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and spear cubes of chicken onto each bamboo skewer. 10. Heat a grill or grill pan on medium-high heat and oil the surface with vegetable oil. 11. Grill the skewers for 5 to 6 minutes on each side. 12. Serve hot with the peanut dipping sauce.
Grapefruit St-Germain Cocktail

Makes 1 cocktail 1 1/2 oz. Hendricks gin 2 oz. St-Germain (elderflower liqueur) 1 1/2 oz. grapefruit juice Ice 46 oz. sparkling water Grapefruit segments and cucumber slices for garnish 1. In a large cocktail glass, stir together gin, St-Germain and grapefruit juice. 2. Fill glass with ice, top with sparkling water and garnish with grapefruit segments and cucumber slices.
4. Thread 1 piece of bread, 1 tomato, 1 piece of cucumber, 1 mozzarella ball and 1 basil leaf onto each cocktail pick. Just before serving, drizzle each pick liberally with sherry vinaigrette. Serve extra vinaigrette on the side for dipping.

When Goff and Engel saw the house for the first time, it hadnt been lived in for 60 years and was in such an advanced state of decay that they didnt seriously consider buying it. But Engel just couldnt get the property out of his mind. He talked about it for two weeks straight, says Goff. One year later, they had sold their Los Angeles home and were in negotiations to purchase the property.

Whats left behind

The house has had few owners. One of them, Frances Provines, lived there for 41 years and let Virginia Creeper vines engulf the exterior, giving it a spooky look. Generations of children in the tiny town considered the house haunted. The family who owned it before Goff and Engel used the building to store furniture left behind in their many rental properties. When the couple bought the house, several pieces remained. Some of them, including an old toy horse on wheels, have found a home a few blocks away in the Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society.

Ghosts of things past

When Goff and Engel signed the deed in 2009, the house had electricity in three rooms, heat in one room, a makeshift kitchen and bathand no ghosts. A psychic went through the house and came up with zero, says Engel. Goff has a theory: I think it was empty for so long, its justempty. When you walk through the rooms you get absolutely no sense of anyone else who lived here before.

t first, it seems a bit crazy: Phillip Engel (an IT consultant) and his husband, Mark Goff (a costumer for TV and stage turned pop-up album designer), move from Los Angeles to a decrepit 140-yearold house in Healdsburg (pop. 10,000) and, with next to no renovation experience, decide to fix it up with their own four hands. Two years, several Home Depot how-to books and thousands of Internet searches later, they have nearly finished the master bath and the kitchen. I think it was a combination of financial constraints and us being naive about the processits a lot easier to say youre going to do it yourself than to actually do it, says Engel. But the only way we could afford to get the work done was to take it on ourselves. During the process theyve had some professional helpincluding a consultation with an architectural restoration expert whose first assessment was, Its a borderline teardown but for the most part theyre laying tile, replastering walls and scraping molding without assistance. Although the renovation road hasnt been smooth (low points include the day the showers marble ceiling came crashing to the floor and the afternoon a local muttered loudly, Looks like a million-dollar pile of kindling to me! as he rolled past on a motorized scooter), its been rewarding. The sense of accomplishment and knowing that someday we will sit around bored in our beautiful house is what keeps us going, says Goff.

Although the couple had the cabinets made by a master craftsman, they installed and painted them on their own. The glass panes in the cabinet doors have an authentic rippled look, as they are made from the windows of another old house that was being demolished.

A ray guntoting tech entrepreneur looks to designer Jon Staub to turn his chilly SoMa loft into a place where personality rules.

The design of Christopher Michels San Francisco loft is inspired by his fascination with all things mechanical, a childhood obsession with Victorian futurism la Jules Verne, his early career as a navigator in the Navy and his current role in the tech industry. t was love at first sight. In 2008, a classic loft in San Franciscos South of Market neighborhood wooed former Navy pilot turned start-up impresario Christopher Michel with its soulful authenticity: stately brick-and-timber good looks, a beautiful patina more than 100 years in the making and a storied past. Over its lifetime, the 3,500-square-foot space has housed a carpet factory, a few tech companies and a mysterious testing facility, as one salty taxi driver recently revealed upon delivering Michel to his front door. Ah, the laboratory, said the cabbie, with theatrical, Vincent Pricestyle flair. But as many quixotic tales go, the enchantment between home and homeowner was short-lived: Just a week after moving in, Michel, who had purchased the partially furnished loft from a colleague, was already searching for the eject button. I found myself living in the kitchen and my bedroom, says the 43-year-old Connecticut native. Everything else just felt really cold and uninviting. For better or worse, Michels time in the loft was limited due to his frequent travels as a photographer
and entrepreneur. (He founded several tech start-upsincluding Military.com, an online portal for soldiers and their familiesand, most recently, Nautilus Ventures, a seed-investment fund.) In hindsight, acquiring the previous owners frosty European trappings (think boxy Italian sofas, an angular Jean Prouv Cit armchair and gray area rugs) didnt harmonize with Michels quirky, retro-industrialist vibe (hes a collector of steampunk-inspired gadgetry, antique paintings of ships and bulky vintage cameras). The previous decor seemed optimized for design rather than comfort, he says. It took Chris a while to articulate the problem, says Philpotts Interiors Jon Staub, whom Michel recruited to help him seek out alternative dwellings in the city. I knew I could help him tailor the space to fit him like a glove. Indeed, when viewings of lofts in SFs new residential towers revealed spaces of the bright-and-shinybut spiritlessvariety, Michel began to rediscover all the reasons he fell for his brick-and-timber beauty in the first place. Then I realized I couldnt live anywhere else, he says.

Heavy Metal
In its raw state, cold-rolled steel is an unusual decorative element. Its often buried under paint or lacquer. In the living room (above) it provides a regal backdrop in the form of unfinished tiles. Since its also a pure material, it holds up well against the old fir floors and brick walls, says Staub. A sparkling chandelier in the dining room lends an effervescent quality to the lofts industrial ambience. We liked the glamour of this space how the chandelier gears it for evening useso we left it as is, says Staub, who lauds the environmental practice of a partial renovation. Why throw out good things? Incorporate what works, but layer in your personality. A rehab doesnt have to be all or nothing.

Recital Space, Robots and a Retro Buzz

Two leather wing chairs from De Sousa Hughes and a raw-bulb floor lamp create a spontaneous, usable space between the media room and gallery (above). The built-in intimacy makes it ideal for hosting private conversations or impromptu concerts (Michel, a pianist in the rough, will occasionally play James Bond theme music on the nearby baby grand). Some of Michels favorite toys include (from bottom left): glossy photography books and old Polaroid cameras, a vintage Elektra espresso machine in the kitchen and robots that, Michel jokes, come to life at night to clean the house.

In such an open and dynamic loft, we felt that the bedroom should be a cocoon, says Staub, who added hefty, wide louver shutters throughout. A piece by emerging SF artist Jenn Porreca was painted on reclaimed wood floors from temporary shelters built after the 1906 earthquake. Along with its brick backdrop, the medium provides a rustic counterpoint to Porrecas otherworldly scene.

Warm up a sterile space with wood. In Michels mind, the master bathroom, previously bedecked in all-white tile, evoked images of a YMCA shower. It felt very institutional, he says. To warm the space, Staub added mahogany wainscoting, a teak bench top and a custom Tansu vanity made of ebonized wood. Treating the vanity like furniture really adds a level of elegance, says Staub.

Antonio Martins has an affinity for keeping options open and construction visible. This idea comes into play in the media room, where he stripped the upholstery fabric from a pair of Hans Wegner Papa Bear armchairs and left them covered in basic muslin. Im looking for the right fabric, Martins says. But until I find it, they look cool this way. The chairs simple form is juxtaposed against an elaborate painting done by Martins friend Howie Keck and featuringyou guessed itDrew Barrymore.

Inspiration from the Runway

At first, I always think I want an all-white room, but then I see patterns and colors that I cant resist, says Mary Alice Haney. Im constantly inspired by whats on the runway. For the dining room, that meant a chocolate ikat fabric for the chairs and antique chandeliers for added sparkle.

The design of Christopher Michels San Francisco loft is inspired by his fascination with all things mechanical, a childhood obsession with Victorian futurism la Jules Verne, his early career as a navigator in the Navy and his current role in the tech industry. In the gallery (this page), Jon Staub designed a system of adjustable shelves for Michels photographs and a cabinet, made of reclaimed Douglas fir, that displays some of his prized steampunk loot.

What: The Prototype lamp Who: Matt Gagnon Where: Glendale Why You Need to Know: Gagnons work, everything from shelves to set design, explores the intersection of the handcrafted and the mass produced. In May, Gagnon created 22 Prototype lamps, each of interchangeable parts and different materials, during a live performance at NYCs Future Perfect. Gagnon hopes to hit on a design that he can mass produce, but for now compares each of the lamps to a jazz riffno two are alike despite being built on the same basic structure.
