it is an honour and a pleasure for me, as the Head of the Institute of

Mining Engineering I at the RWTH Aachen University and as the chairman of the Executive Committee
of AIMS, to invite you to the 5th International Symposium “High Performance Mining” here in Aachen.
The town of Aachen is situated in the heart of Europe and well known for its´ beautiful historical city
center, in particular the ancient cathedral and the city hall.
The AIMS series of symposia has to come to be recognized by the mining society as a leader in
promoting the international transfer of technology. In view of the expressed interest by mining
professionals from around the world, AIMS Symposia like “Rockbolting in Mining”, “High-Performance
Mine Production” and “Rapid Mine Development” have been organized since 1987 on an annual basis.
This year's symposium will strive to provide a forum for presentation, discussion and evaluation of
state-of-the-art and emerging technologies in the field of High Performance Mining with special
emphasis to Automation, Communication and Infrastructure.
The event is designed to be a place for the exchange of information among experts, which in times of
further internationalization and globalization must not be limited to national or european borders.
About 48 presentations by high ranking experts from Australia, Canada, India, Iran, Japan, South
Africa, USA and from Europe as Austria, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia,
Sweden and Turkey are contributing to this objective.
Apart from this, companies active in the field of mining will present themselves in an exhibition.
Exhibition space is still available at the conference and interested companies should contact the
organizers for further information.
At this point, I would like to thank a large number of people for their help organizing and executing
such an event. This includes authors, presenters and chairmen and the companies who support us by

Motivation
“Hochleistungsabbaubetriebe” ist ein
Synonym für Leistungssteigerung,
Produktivitätssteigerung und höhere
Produktionsraten in der Gewinnung. Diese
sind heutzutage entscheidend für den wirt-
schaftlichen Erfolg von Bergbauunternehmen.
Weltweit geht der Trend zu immer leistungs-
fähigeren Tiefbaubetrieben.
Ausschlaggebend für weitere Produktivitäts-
steigerungen sind:
Automatisierung, Kommunikation,
Infrastruktur
Diese umfassen: Fortschritte in der Antriebs-
und Gewinnungstechnik, Logistik,
Instandhaltung, Planung und Organisation.
Einen wesentlichen Schwerpunkt der Themen
werden daher Fragen der kontinuierlichen
Verbesserung von Technologien und
Verfahrensweisen zur weiteren Steigerung der
Produktivität bilden. Hier kann ein Vergleich

Motivation
High performance mining is a synonym for
increased efficiency, increased productivity
and higher production rates in raw materials
extraction. These became the deciding factors
in determining the economic success of a
mining operation.
The global trend in underground mining
operations is towards ever increasing
productivity. The important factors affecting
productivity are:
Automation, Communication,
Infrastructure
These encompass: advances in propulsion
and extraction technology, logistics,
preventative maintenance, planning and
organisation.
The focal point will therefore be the
continuous development of technologies
aimed at improving performance and
productivity. Benchmarking between different
mining operations and sectors can point out
areas which have potential for improvement.
The symposium continues to provide a
platform for knowledge exchange between
international representatives of mining,
tunnelling, suppliers, authorities and research.

Takt fährt der Hochgeschwindigkeitszug
THALYS zwischen Paris und Köln über
Aachen. Dazu verkehren ICE-Züge von

Es bestehen direkte Verbindungen zu den

Frankfurt/Main und Hamm.
An das niederländische Schienennetz ist
