Grade__8th Grade______________ Subject_Algebra-Functions_____

Stage 1- Desired Results

Established Goals: MCC8.F.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output. MCC8.F.2 Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions).

Understandings: Students will understand that.. A function has exactly one input per each output. A function can be represented in multiple ways. A function and relation can model a real world situation. Student will know. The difference between and function and a relation. Students will know how to demonstrate function using different models.

Essential Questions: What is the difference between a function and a relation? How can I model a function? How can a function be model through a real world situation?

Student will be able to Represent a function algebraically, verbally, graphically, and numerically.

Stage 2- Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks: Secret Code Performance Task Function Buddy Project My Machine Project Other Evidence: Quizzes Test Student Response through iResponse Calling on Students Circulation of the Classroom

Stage 3 Learning Plan

. Learning Activities: Students will use traditional classroom assignments with the integration of technology throughout this unit. Students can access all resources through the Unit Scoop It: Function Junction. Day One: 1. Intro Podcast Students will be introduced to the lesson through a Intro Podcast on their Ipads. Unit standards should be recorded in the students Interactive Notebook. Students should highlight what words they feel will be important throughout this unit and interpret their meanings from previous knowledge through a Word link. 2. SE Task: Secret Codes and Numbers Students will work in pairs on the performance task. Students will use codes to decipher meanings to introduce them to the function unit. Students will discuss as a class the outcome of their worksheet and explain the methods they used. Day Two: 3. Main Podcast Students will watch the Podcast of Relations vs. Functions. Students will record notes within their IN when needed. 4. Learning Functions with Domain and Range Students will apply knew knowledge to demonstrate their understanding of Functions. Students have 5 problems to work out and explain in their own words. Students will turn in assignment for class grade. Day Three: 5. Function Buddy Task Students will demonstrate their understanding of modeling functions through an art activity. Students will be assigned a relation and will have to create the other 3 models. Students must use knowledge to determine whether relation is a function and show this without using anything but the function models. 6. Mastering Functions Worksheet For homework student will practice modeling functions through 7 problems. Students will use peer tutors to find mistakes and errors. As a class discussion students will explain their common mistakes and what they should have done. Day Four: 7. iReponse quiz Students will use technology in an opening to demonstrate understanding on material thus

far. Students will receive instant results in class to allow them to self-assess their errors made. 8. Function Machine Podcast and Intro Video Students will watch Function Machine Podcast to explore a new method to functions. Students will watch a interactive video located on the unit Scoop It. Students will discuss with the class throughout the podcast to share their viewpoints on how a function machine words and connect it to real life experiences. 9. Function Machine Interactive Practice For the remainder of class students will work with a peer to practice Function machines and how to form al algebraic and verbal model of a function. 10. Function Machine Homework Quiz Students will complete online Scoop It quiz for homework. Students will complete at least 10 function machines. Students will use photo technology to record score. Day Five: 11. My Machine Task Students will apply and demonstrate their understanding on Functions by relating it to a real world situation. Students will design their own function machine that uses real world scenarios (i.e. vending machine or telephone). Students will not use words or numbers on their demonstrations but are required to write a short 4-5 sentence paragraph explaining their work. Students will self-assess themselves before turning in their assignment using the class rubric. 12. Functions Test Students will be accessed through a 16 question multiple choice test. Students will take the quiz on the computer through Scoop It and record their results using a photo.
