Announcement
APT Distinguished Paper Award 2012
On behalf of the Awarding Committee of Advanced Powder Technology, we are pleased to announce that the following paper has been selected as the winner of the eleventh APT Distinguished Paper Award among the papers published in Volume 23, Issues 16 (2012): Title: Generation of uniform tetrapod-shaped zincoxide nanoparticles by gas-phase reaction with using ow restrictor Authors: Hisashi Yamamoto, Yoshio Otani, Takafumi Seto (Kanazawa University, Japan), Pat Nartpochananon, Tawatchai Charinpanitkul (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand) Advanced Powder Technology, Volume 23, Issue 1, Pages 7179 http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.apt.2010.12.011 Endorsement by the Awarding Committee: Zinc oxide nanoparticles have recently been drawing attention as a functional material, because of their supposedly wide range applications in devices like transparent electronics, semiconductors, UV light emitters, and cosmetics. It is reported to be produced in a variety of ways such as CVD, hydrothermal synthesis, VLS (vaporliquidsolid) growth mechanism, and gas phase oxidation. At present, however, it is difcult to produce it with high purity and high production yield, and the mechanisms of its particle generation and growth are not well known. The authors focus on synthesis of tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide nanoparticles by gas phase oxidation reaction, which has the possibility to make highly-pure particles with high production yield. For the reaction, there are two key parameters: zinc vapor and oxygen ows, and reaction temperature. They have successfully controlled the particle size by adjusting the reaction speed in the tube reactor using a ow restrictor. Their numerical simulation results for the gas ow in the reactor further show agreement with the experimental results. The above results give useful information on particle growth mechanism and size control for gas-to-particle conversion. Besides having academic benets, the article, will contribute greatly to the development of powder technology. It surely deserves the APT Distinguished Paper Award.
