There are over 730 streets in the United States named after Martin Luther King Jr. Later on in life he started to travel around America to speak at meetings and write books. The books he wrote were called The Measure of a Man, Strength to Love, Why we cant wait, The Trumpet of Conscience and The Montgomery Story. He became a minister like his father in a church in Montgomery and was still upset at the way black people were treated. He was also the youngest to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and the Spingarn Medal in 1964. During his leadership life, Martin was arrested for protesting and sent to jail but was soon released because he only had to be in jail for a short time because it wasnt that bad. His house was also bombed because of that. He had a choses of 45 days in jail or a $178 fine, he chose jail. Martin was assassinated on the 4th of April 1968 in Memphis Tennessee, America on his balcony at his hotel, by a man named James Earl Ray. Martins killer died in jail in 1998. He was nearly assassinated a decade earlier than his ultimate death. When the Americas found out Martin was shot, they were really shocked. He died one day after his last speech in 1968. Two funeral services were held for Martin on the 9th of April 1968 in Atlanta Georgia, America. They were held at Ebenezer Baptist Church and at Morehouse College. Thousands of people attended and millions watched on TV.
