Lubbs Physics Class

NOTICE!! - You may not exactly copy another student's design for your project. Your car must be significantly
different. A different color is not significant enough.

September 3th

OBJECTIVE - The objective of this project is to design and manufacture a mouse trap powered car that will travel, under its own power, at least 5 m (16feet, 8inches) within a rectangular space of approximately 1 m x 5 m. Only one mousetrap may be used. No rat traps. (Rat Traps are large and have two springs.) PROJECT GUIDELINES 1. You must successfully demonstrate the car to your class to receive full credit. 2. Three trials will be allowed with the best of the three taken for your score. 3. There are no restrictions on building materials or size except that the car: a. must be powered by one mouse trap that has only one spring; b. must run on at least one wheel (its a car); c. may not be made from a kit; 4. Cars must be propeller or wheel driven with power for the propeller(s) or drive wheel(s) being supplied by the mouse trap; the mouse trap may not operate a switch. 5. The mouse trap(s) must travel with the car. 6. No rubber bands may be used to spin the wheels. 7. The distance between starting and stopping will be measured from the same part of the car, perpendicular to the starting line. 8. Name must be on car.

Grading Criteria

NOTE: A 10 % penalty will be deducted for each construction requirement not met (e.g., unauthorized pre-manufactured body parts). Assuming that all guidelines have been met, the following grading criteria will apply to distance achievements:
