A. WREG Research Agendum: Water-related Disaster Mitigation B. Tentative Research Title: Development of a Methodology in Optimizing Hydraulic Appurtenances in Protection against Hydraulic Hammer through Computational Fluid Dynamics C. Background: Hydraulic or Water Hammer is a hydraulic phenomenon that is caused by a sudden obstruction in the flow of water along a pipeline. This event causes a sudden increase in pressure inside the pipeline which is followed by a decrease and will then oscillate until the pressure is dissipated. The increase in pressure causes huge stresses to develop inside the pipe and may cause rupture on the weak portions of the pipelines. Rupture of pipes will yield to huge economic losses and spillage of water, or in general fluid, that is flowing inside the pipe. Water hammer may also yield damages in turbines affected by the said event. This study aims to provide a methodology in designing Optimum Hydraulic Appurtenances, such as Surge Tanks, to prevent rupture of pipe in such events that water hammer occurs. D. Keywords: Water Hammer, CFD, Surge Tanks E. Expected Outputs: Pressure Distribution of the water inside the pipe experiencing water hammer at different time-steps. Confirmation of the results using well-established equations involving water hammer. Pressure Distribution of the water inside the pipe experiencing water hammer at different time-steps with attached hydraulic appurtenances. The optimal design of Hydraulic Appurtenances at different pipe sizes and flow rate as designed through CFD. Development of a Simpler Methodology in Designing Hydraulic Appurtenances. F. Tentative methodology: Research of typical Configurations of Pipe and Valve systems in high flow scenarios Research and Development of Hydraulic Appurtenances for Protection against Water Hammer. Modelling of the said Configurations with and without the Hydraulic Appurtenances. Running the model to a Compatible CFD software to acquire the pressure distribution of water inside the pipe. Designing the pipes, and surge tanks depending on the acquired pressure distributions. Comparison of the Results and analysing the feasibility of each Alternative through benefit cost analysis..
