DISCUSSION Begin to talk to the children about nature. Ask the children what natural things are in their garden? What do they look like, what do they feel like? Name some plants? Ask the children about colours of things they may see outside in nature. Having these open-ended questions allows the students to think about what their ideas are on the topic before we start the visual experience. ACTIVITY 1. Go outside with one small group at a time and ask to pick up some things from nature. (Depending on their developmental stages, you may have to collect some things beforehand). 2. The children will go outside to the dirt/sand/or tan bark and start to place their natural materials down. 3. During the process of creating the land art, I encourage the teacher to ask the children questions while they are exploring and creating their artwork. 4. Supervision is very important, so you can assist if the children if they need any help. 5. Offer the children if they would like some water, show them the jug of water and pour some into a cup, so they can pour it and incorporate it in their work if they would like. MODIFICATIONS To do this activity with the children one on one, so they can explore their own ideas ASSESSMENT The focus of this experience is about the process of discovery and exploration. It is great for observations anecdotal or running record, photo observation which could be turned into a learning story and shared with the whole room.
