To compare things we use adjectives. (Old, Heavy, Expensive,etc.)

COMPARATIVE FORMS

Older, heavier and more expensive are comparative forms.

The comparative is:

-er or

more

Shorts words (1 syllable) -er old older nice nicer slow slower Example: Rome is old but Athens is older.

Irregular Adjectives: Good Better Example:


- A: Do you feel better today? B: No, I feel worse.

Bad Worse

- The weather wasnt very good yesterday but its better today.

If the word ends: consonant-vowel-consonant, then the last consonant is usually doubled in the comparative:

big bigger

hot hotter

thin thinner

Words ending in y ier

Than: We use than after comparatives: Older than / More expensive than Example: Athens is older than Rome.

Its easier to phone than to write a letter.
