Message from a Parent

Whose Child Is This?

"Whose child is this?" I asked one day Seeing a little one out at play "Mine", said the parent with a tender smile "Mine to keep a little while To bathe his hands and comb his hair To tell him what he is to wear To prepare him that he may always be good And each day do the things he should" "Whose child is this?" I asked again As the door opened and someone came in "Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile "Mine, to keep just for a little while To teach him how to be gentle and kind To train and direct his dear little mind To help him live by every rule And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more Just as the little one entered the door "Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled And each took the hand of the little child "Ours to love and train together Ours this blessed task forever."

Message from a Student

I Want To Be Like You Thank you, teacher, for being my life's role model. When I consider all you've taught me and reflect on the kind of person you are, I want to be like you smart, interesting and engaging, positive, confident, yet unpretentious. I want to be like you well-informed and easy to understand, thinking with your heart as well as your head, gently nudging us to do our best, with sensitivity and insight. I want to be like you giving your time, energy and talent to ensure the brightest possible future

for each of us. Thank you, teacher For giving me a goal to shoot for: I want to be like you! By Joanna Fuchs
School personnel play a major role in the development of our society. They inspire, motivate and pass on knowledge. It's important to remember that each and every one of us is a teacher. Each day we learn and teach one another whether this is in a classroom, at work, or at home. No matter what, there are always lessons to be learned and practiced. 2013 - 2014 represents a year of Glows and Grows. With the change is school identification under the Arkansas ESEA Flexibility Plan, we have some good news and still we have work to do. Mr. Tom Krause stated, If you only do what you know you can do you never do very much. It is time to go beyond what we have always done, because when we dont we limit ourselves. Just because it worked 10 years ago, does not mean it cannot be improved with new features and approaches. Can you imagine Ford Motor Company if they were attempting to still make the same Model T in 2012 that they built in 1908? It will get you there, but

Our success as a school and professional learning community is directly linked to our ability to work as a TEAM (staff, parents, and students). When we all share the same information and support

systems that nurture a safe school, focused on learning, we pave the way for STUDENT SUCCESS! Sincerely, Katina Ray Principal

PRINCIPALS EXPECTATION OF A BASELINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATOR 5As: Actions, Attitude, Accountability, Appearance, Achievement Actions-what you do each and every day impacts peoples lives, either positively or negatively. Aim for the positive at all times. Attitude-complaining never improves a situation. However, a positive attitude coupled with the solution to what you are complaining about, can improve the situation and the soul. Accountability- Meeting deadlines, making phone calls, alleviates your integrity being questioned. Appearance-How you look will determine how you are treated by your parents, by your students, and by your colleagues. We are role models first and foremost, so make sure that each day that you step into the building you look professional! Achievement-Your objective should be that all students are learning and achieving. If the students are not, you should be looking for ways to get them to learn and achieve. You are the best salesman/saleswoman for your subject, not the textbook or worksheets.

Each staff member is expected to comply with the following expectations for professional behavior: 1. Attendance - Be on time each day. All teachers should be at their classroom doors at 7:50 am to greet students. Come to work on a regular basis. 2. Professional Responsibilities - Meet all deadlines. Attendance is to be entered during the first thirty minutes of each school day in EdLine. Keep accurate records and attendance in your grade book. You should not have to reminded about taking daily attendance. Follow guidelines for grading and record keeping. Students should be given a minimum of 9 grades per subject per nine weeks. Meet with your team members and work as a team. Complete all forms accurately and correctly. Create a professional learning community by exercising the seven connecting habits: LISTENING, SUPPORTING, ENCOURAGING, RESPECTING, TRUSTING, ACCEPTING, NEGOTIATING DISAGREEMENTS Open the lines of communication by collaborating with the administration, faculty and staff to solve any problems that occur. Report to duty posts on time and monitor your areas closely. All teachers should have emergency subfolders on their desks. Sub folders should have pertinent information for sub/ or anyone covering your class. Make sure that the work is relevant. All teachers are expected to serve on a committee. Each committee is expected to meet quarterly, provide minutes from their meeting and submit them to Principal. 3. Instruction Expect students to learn and afford them the opportunity to do so. Keep your weekly lesson plans available in your classroom and have daily objectives posted in your classroom. 4. Assessment Each teacher will give weekly assessments in all subject areas. These assessments can be formal / informal. 5. Classroom Management Teach students classroom rules and procedures the first two weeks of school. Reinforce rules and procedures daily. Insist students follow all school rules and procedures. Supervise your students at all times. Students are expected to walk quietly on the right side of the hall with their hands behind their backs. Make sure students enter and exit your class quietly and orderly. Address any violation of school rules, including uniform violations immediately. Students should only be allowed to go to the restroom by

themselves if its an emergency. Other than that, students should only be allowed to use the restroom during designated break times. Please monitor restrooms during breaks. 6. Parental Involvement Contact parents of disruptive students immediately. Encourage parents to visit and take an active role in the classroom. The parents of any student receiving a failing grade or N or U in conduct for the nine weeks should be contacted by phone or parent conference before the nine weeks ends. Also maintain a contact log for your students. A minimum of 7 calls is required weekly. That is 25% of a class of 25 students. Or just over one phone call a day. Monthly positive reports are due to the office at the end of each month.

Treat parents with dignity and respect at all times.

CUSTOMER SERVICE 1. We want students and parents we serve to support our efforts. 2. We want students to appreciate the opportunities and experiences we provide. 3. We want parents to be pleased with our efforts to prepare their children for today and tomorrow. 4. We want parents to be supportive with their time and talents.

The quality and consistency of customer centered service we build into our interactions and processes can make a crucial difference in how we are perceived. In fact, our commitment to quality service can generate major benefits, including more stable and even increasing enrollment and greater parent loyalty. It can even lead to increased parental involvement. Good customer service in our building is critical. It requires sensitivity, caring and a willingness to listen. It requires commitment to finding effective, responsive solutions when co-workers, parents and students face problems or have concerns. It requires us to achieve a level of comfort and competence that will allow us to be flexible, creative, and effective in managing and solving problems. We would like to think that good customer service is the norm among our co-workers, but too often it is not. After all, for some people, good customer service comes naturally. For others, it does not. If we want to have the greatest impact, good customer service needs to be a shared commitment and consistent practice of all staff members. Finally, good customer service is crucial to building and maintaining strong support from each other, student and parents. However, we must know that we are only as good as our weakest link. All faculty and staff must provide good customer service if we hope to have maximum impact. All who interact with us must feel listened to, cared for, respected, and valued if we want their support and loyalty in return. Good customer service is not necessarily expensive, but its absence can be costly.

Students are not allowed in the Staff Lounge/Workroom at any time. Corporal punishment must never be used. Personnel may not leave the building during preparation/planning periods without specific authorization from the principal. Students may not be left unsupervised at any time. Money that has been collected (for approved school projects by the principal) must be turned in to the school secretary daily. The LRSD does not take responsibility for its loss. Please refer to the Teachers Lounge on the LRSD website for guidelines on how to collect money. Students should not be placed in the halls as a disciplinary measure. No student may be sent home in the course of a day. The parent/guardian must check the student out from the office.

The teacher in each classroom or office is in charge of the assigned telephone. Students and others should not be using the classroom telephones. (Safety & Security Transfer *5) 23. Employee Professionalism Employee professionalism is one of (5) priorities for our district. I believe that our staff should set the example and tone for the students and parents we serve. I am aware that we do not have a
33

dress code for staff. However, I believe that it is imperative that we abide by some standard of dress. There are just some things we should not wear at any time to work while students are present. Staff members are asked to only wear blue jeans on Fridays with a Baseline spirit shirt. 24. ATTENDANCE --- Regular attendance is a critical component of the school program for effectiveness and efficiency. The LRSD provides ten (10) days each year for sick leave. When a staff member must be absent, the following procedure must be followed: Step 1: Notify SEMS/SOS to request sub 447-1111 Step 1a: SEMS/SOS Help Desk (if needed) 447-1112 Step 2: Notify the principal at home 539-1173 Step 3: Notify the principal if youre tardy or absent immediately! SmartFindExpress is the new Little Rock School District reporting system. You may still use the numbers above to report an absence or you may go online at http://sfe.lrsd.org to report and absence as well. 25. STAFF MAILBOXES/E-MAIL/VOICE MAILBOX--- Staff members should check their mailboxes, e-mail, and voice mailbox at least twice each day (the morning and the afternoon). Staff members are responsible for all information placed in mailboxes, sent on e-mail, and voice mailbox.

26. HOMEWORK POLICY --- Homework assignments are required by the LRSD. Homework assignments should
34

be given on skills previously taught in the classroom and should be assigned as follows: st 1 Grade 15 to 20 minutes each night nd 2 Grade 20 to 30 minutes each night rd th 3 5 Grade Homework Policy Although K students are not required to have homework, teachers are strongly encouraged to send practice activities home with the students. The teacher must make adequate lesson plans. Lesson plans should be detailed enough so that a substitute teacher would have no problem knowing exactly what to do in your class. It is the teachers responsibility to make sure lesson plans are at school when you are absent. Planning for the resource student. . . . . . It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher and the resource teacher to conference often concerning the needs of these students. If behavior problems occur with these students then the resource teacher and the classroom teacher are responsible for developing a behavioral IEP (with the help of the RTI/SBIT Team) for the student. A conference with the student's parent/guardian must be held when any changes are to be made to the child's IEP. Grades for these students are a combination of the resource grade and the classroom grade in those subjects addressed in the resource classroom. Assigned work in all subjects must be modified by the classroom teacher according to the student's IEP. This may require that an asterisk (*) be placed by all letter grades on the interim report as well as the report card. Resource students should ALWAYS have work to do in the regular class. Planning for the substitute. . . . . . A substitute folder should be readily accessible at all times. This folder should include fire and tornado maps, your schedule, current lesson plans, additional work, health concerns, guidelines for computer usage, and any additional information regarding students that will ensure the substitute to have a successful day in your classroom. Please note any special circumstances the substitute should be aware of. Substitutes will be provided a name badge when they arrive in the office. Substitute Folder (6 class sets of run-off work ready for students)Substitute Folders will be checked on .

The Baseline Parent Handbook was printed in the agenda books/planners for 2nd-5th grades. Individual parent handbooks were generated for pre-kindergarten 1st grade students. Make sure all new students during the school year receive one from the office. 38. PTA You are encouraged to go beyond the number of PTA meetings required in your contract. If the staff is not receptive to attend Parent/Teacher Association meetings, what is the purpose of the meetings? We do not have that many meetings and they normally do not last longer than an hour. Please consider this as a plea
40

for more participation. When we ask parents to come to all meetings, would it not seem necessary to ask the same of all staff members teacher, specialists, instructional assistants, and administrative staff? Please help us have 100% staff membership Its only $5.00. 39. PREPARATION/RELEASE TIME All time designed as planning/release time is to be used for that purpose. General Procedures Opening School Procedures Each morning the teacher is required to stand outside their classroom door to greet their students by 7:50 a.m. Students should quickly get into the routines and get ready for learning. When entering the classroom, students should take down their chairs, empty book bags, hang up jackets, and take their seats. They will be given a breakfast for the BIC time. A student helper should take up pencils and sharpen them. All students should be seated quietly before the morning announcements begin with the door to the classroom closed and locked. A quick review of the daily lessons and assignments should occur. No students should leave the classroom during the literacy block unless it is an emergency. Assembly Procedures Each teacher will be notified by intercom to bring their class to the cafeteria. Specialists will be expected to monitor student behavior if an assembly falls during a pull-out period. Teachers and support staff should work together to ensure appropriate classroom behavior during an assembly.

Dismissal Procedures Except for bus and van riders, the teacher must deliver students to the dismissal area. Do not send students ahead of you, always lead the line, and make sure everyone leaves the classroom together. Teachers must clearly know where they dropped all students off for dismissal. All

44

specialists/teachers will be assigned to assist with dismissal per the duty schedule. Bulletin Boards and Displays All bulletin boards are required to be complete at all times. They MUST be changed a minimum of once per month. A caption should be displayed with each bulletin board. Student work is required to be on display inside and outside all classrooms including specialty classes at all times. When displaying work outside the classroom, it must be mounted to tag board or construction paper. When displaying a poster exhibit, be sure the paper is cut neatly. No chairs, desks, or table displays are permitted in the hallways without prior approval from the principal. Exiting the Classroom When students prepare to leave for specialty classes, lunch, and the end of the day, all desks should be cleared with materials put away. HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT FIELD TRIP MEDICATION PROCEDURE

47

The Little Rock School District established these guidelines for staff in order to competently and safely meet the medical needs of students who require medication administration while on a district sponsored off campus educational activity. The staff person accompanying the student during the field trip will be responsible for security of the medication, medication administration and documentation. SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Teacher will notify the school nurse of a scheduled field trip, including location of trip[, duration and a list of students attending, as soon as the trip has been scheduled or at least 1 week in advance. 2. Receive the medication in a properly labeled medication envelope from the school health personnel (the morning of the field trip). 3. Keep the medication in a secure place at all times while on the field trip. 4. Administer the medication within 30 minutes before or after the time indicated on the medication envelope following all instructions carefully. 5. Return the medication envelope to the health room following the field trip. Person responsible will sign their name, and document on the envelope, the date and time the medication was given. SCHOOL NURSE RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Notify teachers of students requiring medications on field trips. 2. The nurse can take the prescription bottle and place one dose of medication in a small manila envelope, identifying the name of the student, name of medication, dose, route and time to be taken. Also indicate a place on the envelope for the medication administrator to sign and put the time and date the medication was administered. The envelope is to be sealed. 3. After the field trip, the envelope is to be returned to the nurse who may make note on the Medication Log form and store it in the Medication Log Envelope or in the students health folder. 4. Emergency meds such as Epi-pens, Benadryl and Inhalers will be packed for the trip as needed. Include the Individual Health Plans (IHP), Food Allergy Plans (FAP) and Asthma Action Plans (AAP). One good method of doing this is to put the medication and medication consent form in a Medication Log Envelope (or Manila envelope provided by the office) and staple the IHP, FAP or AAP on the back of the envelope. Be sure to review protocol and establish competency of the medication administrator to administer Epi-pens and Inhalers. Competent students may carry and administer their own inhaler and/or Epi-pen according to state law. 5. Address all food allergy concerns if there are plans for eating meals or snacks during the field trip. 6. In the absence of the nurse, preparation of field trip medication may be delegated to the Certified Medication Assistant or a teacher who has received training.

48

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: If a liquid medication is to be dispensed, the original container and a device for measuring the medication must be taken on the trip. If a medication is not given as it is ordered, the person responsible for giving the medication must notify the students parent, the students physician, the school nurse and the principal. (Parents may call the physician but if unable to reach the parent, the physician must be called directly). Upon return to school, a Medication Error Report must be filled out. Students with Diabetes Provisions will be made for students who need to carry equipment to monitor and treat diabetes. Blood glucose checks will be done at the prescribed time. Safety precautions will be followed with the use and disposal of lancets and needles. If snacks or meals are part of the activity agenda, a parent or nurse must assist the student with carb counting and the calculation and administration of the prescribed insulin. If a parent cannot attend the field trip, the Health Services Coordinator will designate a district nurse to assist the student. AR law now requires that at the request of parents, schools to provide personnel to be trained to assist with Glucagon administration by injection in the event a student with diabetes becomes comatose. If a volunteer cannot be found, a nurse must attend the school related activities even when the student is not in need of insulin.

Comprehensive Assessment System The Little Rock School District has a comprehensive assessment system that measures academic achievement and growth for all students. These tests fall into two categories: norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. Norm-

referenced tests are designed to compare the academic achievement of local students to students across the country at the same grade level who have taken the same time. Criterion-referenced tests measure how well our students are learning the state standards and benchmarks. Assessments are scheduled as outlined below; please note that the state test dates are subject to change by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Revised 03/05/07 FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES Each month we will conduct a fire drill for students and staff members to practice safe evacuation. We must evacuate the building in one minute to comply with the Fire Department standards. Teachers are asked to practice with the students until they can move quickly and quietly. Remind students not to talk or run during any drills or emergencies. TORNADO DRILL PROCEDURES During severe weather, the television will be monitored by the office staff. In the event of a tornado alert, students and staff will be alerted by the sounding of fog horns. If the lights in your room go out during inclement weather and you have not heard the fog horn alert, teachers and students should follow the tornado drill instructions automatically. No student or teacher should take cover in a room having outside windows. Heads should be placed between legs and hands over head while you are in a sitting or kneeling position. During the Bomb Drill We will use the Fire Drill Exits routes to exit the building. All classes will report to the playground on the back of the campus and remain there until the all clear is given. (In the event of a true emergency, we would use the side walk and report to the church.) We will use the intercom and make the following statement The Field Day has been Cancelled. You will immediately exit the building and report to the Big Field. Bullet Drill in the Building We will use the intercom and make the following statement Please bring Chart 4 to the Front Office. You will immediately turn off your lights and move the students away from the door and window until the all clear is given. You will be provided a Green Sheet of Paper. This paper will be used to slide under your door to let us know that everyone is safe and secure and the suspect is not in your classroom. Bullet Drill outside the Building We will conduct this during the lunch period. --I realize many of you allow the students to be door greeters, please make sure that you have identified the individual at the door before the students open the door. If the office has not notified you that you are having a visitor, please do not open the door and tell the guest through the door to return to the office. Then call the office to let us know that someone was at your door so we can get security on the issue.
