Double Entry Journal/Weekly Reading Response Name: ___Courtney Taylor_____ Classrooms That Work - Chapter 1 Quotes/Concepts from Text

Effective classrooms should give maximized opportunities to read. P. 2 Teachers in the highest-achieving classrooms used lots of scaffolding and coaching providing support but always trying to get the most out of every child. P. 3 12 factors were identified that research suggests are important to high literacy achievement: assessment, community, involvement, comprehensive curriculum, engagement, instruction, leadership, materials, parent participation, perseverance, professional development, specialists support, and time spent reading and writing. P. 7-8 A balanced class is like a multivitamin. P. 8 Higher-level thinking skills should be practiced in class and implemented by teachers. (i.e: no more one-word answers) P. 9 Teachers get the best results from their students when they use a variety of formats for teaching. (i.e: small-group, whole-group, or one-to-one.) P. 10 If teachers take into account their students interests, they can increase their engagement drastically. P. 10 Although there are many restrictions on what elementary classroom teachers can do, most teachers are still given a great deal of freedom in deciding exactly how their classrooms will be run P.11 Your reactions/thoughts/questions Opportunity in ALL subjects should be a given from the start in my opinion! While scaffolding sounds like an easy thing to do, I realize that it is a pretty difficult process. This takes strong classroom management and practice in training students. Perseverance and community stood out to me. Two words that I definitely want to present in my future classroom!

A multivitamin is a great analogy that I have not heard of before. Excellent way of describing a balanced classroom. No one-words answers is something I agree with. I like to see students struggle to find their voice as it is a community building and confidence boosting practice I will implement in classes of all ages. Although I prefer one-to-one and small-groups, I do believe a healthy balance of whole-group learning is just as important to diverse learners.

I believe taking pools or having kids vote on the next way a subject is presented is a great way to do this. They will feel more empowered when they have a choice over their educational learning. Great way to sum up the chapter.
