Generic Name: Cefixime


Indications: Bronchitis, bronchiectasis with infection, secondary infections of chronic
respiratory tract diseases, pneumonia. Pyelonephritis, cystitis, gonococcal
urethritis. Cholecystitis, cholangitis, scarlet fever, otitis media, sinusitis.
Drug Classification: Cephalosporin
Mechanism of action: A third general cephalosporin that inhibits cell wall synthesis,
promoting osmotic instability usual bactericidal.
Dosage: Cap (adult and children): > 30 kg 100mg bid. More severe or intractable
infections up to 200 mg bid. Drops, granules, susp (children): 1.5-3mg/kg body
weight bid. More severe or intractable infections up to 6mg/kg body weight.
Special Precaution: Hypersensitivity to penicillin. Personal or familial history of some
form of allergy. Serious renal function disorder. Poor oral nutrition, elderly,
debuilitated patients. Pregnancy and lactation, children 6 months.
Pregnancy Risk Category: B
Adverse reaction: shock, hypersensitivity, hematologic disorder, GI disorder, Vit. K
deficiency.
Contraindication: History of shock caused by cefixim. Hypersensitivity.
Form: Capsules, drops, granules and suspension
Nursing Responsibilities:
 Obtain urine specimen for culture and sensitivity after first dose. Therapy may
begin pending results.
 To prepare oral suspension, add required amount of water to powder into two
portions. Shake well after each addition. After mixing, susp is stable for 14 days.
No need to refrigerate but keep tightly closed. Shake well before using.
 With large doses/prolonged therapy, monitor for superinfection, especially in
high-risk patients.
 Tell patient to take all the medication prescribed, even after he feels better.
 Assess patient for development of rash and occurance of side effects.
