WORK EXPERIENCE
LEADERSHIP Center for Educational Leadership and Technology (Marlborough, MA) July 2011-June 2012 As Senior Research and Planning Associate, advised executive officers of school districts and state education agencies on performance management, strategic planning, leadership development, instructional improvement, and innovative program design. School District of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA) July 2008July 2011 As Assistant Superintendent, led 30-32 schools serving 16,000 students each year in accelerating student achievement, promoting safety, and managing operations. While managing 47 administrators and 2,000 other employees, led my region to outpace the District in increasing students State Reading and Math Test scores. Decreased serious incidents by 20% and violent incidents by 23%. Also assisted in negotiating a historic contract with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. As Interim Chief Academic Officer, directed curricular, instructional, assessment, and grant writing programs and services to achieve annual performance targets for 271 schools serving 165,000 students. While supervising administrative and instructional employees, and effectively managing a $1.5 billion budget, led 39 additional schools to meet all Adequate Yearly Progress targets within a single school year. Also established more rigorous principal and teacher appraisal systems, opened four new professional development centers to provide data-informed sessions for 20,000 employees, and assisted with design and implementation of the school turnaround process.

Richmond City Public Schools (Richmond, VA) July 2007June 2008 As Chief of Staff, supervised the Leadership Team, promoted citywide collaboration and directed strategic planning and implementation of the districts New Direction: From Competence to Excellence reform initiative, including leading the development of Spanish Immersion, Core Knowledge Academy, and middle years International Baccalaureate and athletic programs. In a District of 50 schools serving 25,000 students, managed 12 executive cabinet members and additional central office staff. During the same year, 88% of the schools met all Adequate Yearly Progress targets. Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) August 2006June 2007 As University Supervisor of Principal Interns, while completing the coursework for the Urban Superintendents Doctoral Program, was responsible for the mentoring and development of Harvard University Masters candidates who were completing their principal internships in two nearby districts. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (Charlotte, NC) February 1994June 2006 As Principal of Bruns Avenue Academy of Creative Learning (2002-2006), Oaklawn School of Math, Science and Technology (2000-2002) and Reid Park International Academy (1994-2000), served an average of 600 students and 70 employees per year. Demonstrated the highest growth in Reading Test scores and the second highest in Math scores of all CMS schools from 2002 to 2006, opened and led a new Pre-International Baccalaureate and French Immersion magnet school, led the development of innovative curricula, oversaw one new school construction project and one school renovation project, and established local and international partnerships with universities, businesses and organizations. Creighton School District (Phoenix, AZ) August 1991February 1994 As Director of Second Language Acquisition Programs, provided leadership and training for 1,000 district-wide staff members and the parents of 8,000 students to ensure enhancement of program quality and compliance with federal, state and local guidelines for bilingual, ESL, multicultural education, and foreign language programs.

San Francisco Unified School District (CA) December 1987August 1991 As Bilingual/Cross-cultural Specialist, provided leadership and training for staff members in 12 schools to ensure program quality and compliance with federal, state and local guidelines for Spanish-English and Chinese-English bilingual, ESL, and multicultural education programs. Also served as leader of the states Program Quality Review Teams to assess the performance of SFUSD schools, make recommendations for improvement, and submit reports to the State Department of Public Instruction.
