Dysphagia

In traditional Chinese medicine, dysphagia is divided into two types: In one, food is
difficult to swallow, and in the second, food is regurgitated right after intake.
Generally, the two types are found together or appear at different stages of a disease.
The dysphagia occurs in cancer of esophagus or cardia, spasms of cardia, esophageal
diverticulum, neurosis of esophagus, and esophagitis, all of which may be treated by
the following methods.
Applications of hand therapy:
Acupuncture therapy:
At regular and extra acupoints:
Location: Neiguan (PC 6), Hegu (LI 4) and Zhongkui (EXUE 4).

Method of manipulation: The strong stimulation is applied and the needles are
retained for 30 minutes.
At reflective points:

Location: Chest point, stomach, and intestine point.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 1 cm and retained for five
minutes.

At reflective areas:

Location: Chest area and upper abdomen area in palmar reflective areas and ulnar
reverse palmar reflective areas.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted and removed right after twisting,
lifting, and thrusting stimulation.
At special acupoints beside the second metacarpal bone:

Location: Neck acupoint and upper limb acupoint for patients with lesion in
esophagus; and stomach acupoint for patients with lesion in stomach.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 15
minutes after medium needling stimulation.
