The dark swallows will return
on your balcony will hang their nests,
and once again will knock in play
against your window glass.

But those that stopped their Ilight and perched
to observe your beauty and my good luck,
those that have learnt our names...
those... will not return!

The honeysuckle will return,
to climb the walls in your garden,
and open once again at evening
their even more beautiIul Ilowers,

but those blooms that were Iull oI dew
whose we saw the trembling drops
Iall like tears oI the day ...
those... will not return!

Ardent words oI love will return
to sound again in your ears;
and your heart Irom the depths oI sleep
perhaps will wake again;

But mute, absorbed, on bended knee,
as one adores God at His altar,
as I`ve loved you ... make no mistake,
none will love you like that!
Volveran las oscuras golondrinas
en tu balcon sus nidos a colgar,
y otra vez con el ala a sus cristales
jugando llamaran.
Pero aquellas que el vuelo reIrenaban
tu hermosura y mi dicha a contemplar,
aquellas que aprendieron nuestros nombres...
esas... no volveran!.
Volveran las tupidas madreselvas
de tu jardin las tapias a escalar,
y otra vez a la tarde aun mas hermosas
sus Ilores se abriran.
Pero aquellas, cuajadas de rocio
cuyas gotas mirabamos temblar
y caer como lagrimas del dia...
esas... no volveran!
Volveran del amor en tus oidos
las palabras ardientes a sonar;
tu corazon de su proIundo sueo
tal vez despertara.
Pero mudo y absorto y de rodillas
como se adora a Dios ante su altar,
como yo te he querido...; desengaate,
asi... no te querran!

Kukucka

Sedi, sedi samucka
na javore kukucka.
Pocuva tam, pocuva,
ako vetrik poduva.

Pod javorom dievcina
kukulienku zaklina:
,Povedzze mi, ty to znas,
kedy pjdem na sobas?'

Sedi, sedi samucka
na javore kukucka.
Sedi nemo, jaj, beda!
co mi neodpoveda?

,Jajze, Boze! co je to?
Subil sa mi na leto;
uz to leto uchodi
a mj mily nechodi!'

Zavial vetor kadesi
kukuk leti za lesy
a pred ou ktos` zastane:
,Mila, ve uz po Jane!'

Cuckoo
She is sitting, sitting alone,
in the maple tree cuckoo.
There she is listening, listening to,
the wind blowing

Under the maple tree a girl
is asking the cuckoo:
,Tell me, you know it
When I will be married?'

She is sitting, sitting alone,
in the maple tree cuckoo.
Sitting dumb, yow, alas!
why isnt she answering me?

,Yow, god! What is this?
Hes promised to be mine in summer
summer has already gone
and my dear isnt coming!'

The wind has blown somewhere
The cuckoo is Ilying behind the woods
And somebody stands in Iront oI her:
,Dear, aIter the midsummer Ior sure!'

First Dream

Do you know how sweet, sweet dream I had?
I can`t remove this dream from my mind.
The sky was gold, full of birds and I felt hot wind,
land as a carpet made from god`s flowers.

Look! These birds are sitting on my shoulders,
and talking with me like with a brother,
in my ear, they are singing a secret song, the
same,
like in God`s fame in my eye.

Oh, and these flowers, sisters of charm,
are hugging me to warm,
And they talk to me with an eye full of love,
with breath they fill my soul.

The Song Of Istanbul

In Istanbul, in the Bosphorus,
I am poor Orhan Veli;
I am the son oI Veli
With indescribable sadness.

I am sitting by the shore oI Rumeli,
I am sitting and singing a song:

``The marble hills oI Istanbul,
Landing on my head, oh, landing are the sea gulls;
Hot, homesick tears Iill my eyes,
My coy,
I`m in mood cause oI you

'The middle oI Istanbul is cinema,
Don`t tell my sadness and dejection to my mother;
Others speak, Iall in love,
but what's that to me?
My lover,
On your head I am.''

In Istanbul, in the Bosphorus,
I am the poor Orhan Veli,
The son oI Veli

7he Albatros
3ometimes, to entertain themselves, the men of the crew
Lure upon deck an unlucky albatross, one of those vast
8irds of the sea that follow unwearied the voyage through,
Flying in slow and elegant circles above the mast.

ho sooner have they disentangled him from their nets
7han this aerial colossus, shorn of his pride,
Coes hobbling pitiably across the planks and lets
his great wings hang like heavy, useless oars at his side.
how droll is the poor floundering creature, how limp and weak

he, but a moment past so lordly, flying in state!
7hey tease him:
0ne of them tries to stick a pipe in his beak;
Another mimics with laughter his odd lurching gait.

7he Poet is like that wild inheritor of the cloud,
A rider of storms, above the range of arrows and slings;
Exiled on earth, at bay amid the jeering crowd,
he cannot walk for his unmanageable wings.

Behind, mountains and seas,
Clouds, beaks and wings,
Sunsets, dawns.

Look at her there! Her dream
hanging from nothing

O longing, firm marble,
steady light, steadfast moving
waters of my soul.

Someone said: Wake up!

The Kite

The kite was flying high,
below the boys were standing:
They wanted to fly so high
as their little kite.

Suddenly the strong wind came
and gripped the boys` kite:
Every happiness will fly away
if you don`t hold it tight.

The kite is already in the sky,
the string is hurting the fingers:
There is no happiness

Autumn
Look into the eyes of autumn. The trees in the park
blushing like girls listening to rude jokes -
as if they wanted to leave.

Look into the eyes of autumn. Chestnuts
are rolling down the street until they hit the first wall
and smash their heads helplessly.

Look into the eyes of autumn. Leaves are falling down,
tears are falling down, rain, fog and nests
and in the night sky a star is falling down
like a tear down the glass.

Look into the eyes of autumn. It thundered, a red flame
burst out
and around the autumn smokes, around the dead trees,
around the falling leaves, tears and stars

a human star is rising,

the star that is lifting the heads of millions of people
from the autumn tearful hands.

Look straight into the eyes of autumn.

Eternity

Your face
is like amphora
clenched in wrinkles of netting.

When it gets dark
it lights me in my sleep above the black rock
for all paper boats
for the boats sent
to the sea between us.

On the amphora
seven dancing lancers
never catch up
the barefoot slave

The barefoot slave on the amphora
never sings

Only silence that silence after oil
mother will be here forever
water pays water by water
and winter strokes by cold.

Vecnos

Tvoja tvr

zovret v pletive vrsok

Ke sa zvecer
svieti mi v spnku nad ciernou skalou
pre vsetky papierov loky
pre loky vyhnan

Spring poem

Nothing is holding me from my first spring poem.
The sun is on the heaven, it is shining and heating
and yesterday I saw the first swallow, which like
a minister
cut with her gentle scissors
coloured ribbon on the floury threshold of spring.

The sun is on the heaven, the blinds can see it too.
And the old man, who died on the first spring day,
is knocking on the coffin, crying, poking out his
fingers through the earth,
so that he can caress the first grass, first flower,
first mole`s tower
and last grandson`s tear, which is trickling down
the back of cross
and leaves the path, where the small flies are
bathing.

In the park, the lovers are wandering and waiting
for green leaves,
so that they can hide their love from eyes of thee
world.
The benches are waiting, where it will be written
again:
Thank you for not damaging the all of us property!

But the poet, who has bought a new hat and feels
good in the world,
is secretly preparing the tablets, which he will
deliver at the first warm night:
Thank you, my dears, that you have engraved to
the bench your hearts similar to green pears
and yours lovely names
Oh Ivan, oh Bozena,
for you, I present my first spring poem.

Nic ma uz nezdrz od prvej jarnej bsne.
Slnko je na nebi, svieti a hreje

aby mohol pohladka prv trvu, prv kvet,
prv vezu krtka

a zanechva cesticku, v ktorej sa kpu musky.

aby mohli ukry svoju lsku pred ocami sveta.
Cakaj lavicky, na ktorch bude zase napsan:

BLACK SHADOW

When I think you've passed me over
Once again you rise and haunt me,
Overpowering black shadow
Prowling round my bed to taunt me.

When again I dream you've vanished,
In the bare sun you astound me.
You're the shine of stars above me.
You're the howl of wind around me.

If they sing, I hear your singing.
If they mourn, I hear your mourning.
You're the murmur of the river
And the evening and the morning.

You are all and all becomes you,
All about me, leaving never,
Living in me, living for me,
Shadow over me forever.

Good-bye rivers, good-bye fountains;
Good-bye, little rills;
Good-bye, sight of my eyes:
I don't know when we'll see us again.
Sod of mine, sod of mine,
Sod where I was raised,
Small orchard I love so,
Dear fig trees that I planted,
Meadows, streams, groves,
Stands of pine waved by the wind,
Little chirping birds,
Darling cottage of my joy,
Mill in the chestnut wood,
Clear nights of brilliant moonlight,
Cherished ringing bells
Of the tiny parish church,
Blackberries in the brambles
That I used to give my love,
Narrow footpaths through the cornfields,
Good-bye, for ever good-bye!
Good-bye, heaven! Good-bye, happiness!
I leave the house of my birth,
I leave the hamlet that I know
For a world I haven't seen!
I leave friends for strangers,
I leave the lowland for the sea,
I leave, in short, what I well love...
Would I didn't have to go!
But I'm poor and-base sin!-
My sod is not my own
For even the shoulder of the road
Is loaned out to the wayfarer
Who was born star-crossed.
I must therefore leave you,
Small orchard I loved so,
Beloved fireplace of home,
Dear trees that I planted,
Favourite spring of the livestock.
Good-bye, good-bye, I'm leaving,
Hallowed blades of the churchyard
Where my father lies buried,
Saintly blades I kissed so much,
Dear land that brought us up
Good-bye Virxe da Asuncin,
White as a seraph,
I carry you in my heart:
Plead with God on my behalf,
Virxe da Asuncin of mine.
Far, very far away hear
The church bells of Pomar;
For hapless me-alas-
They shall never ring again.
Hear them afar (farther away yet).
Every peal deals out pain,
I part alone without a friend...
Good-bye land of mine, good-bye!
Farewell to you too, little darling...!
Farewell forever perhaps...!
I send you this farewell crying
From the precious coastline.
Don't forget me, little darling,
If I should die of loneliness...
So many leagues offshore...
My dear house! My home!

-Irei, mais dme un biquio
antes que de ti me aparte,

e moita vergonza fora
ter un pecado tan grande.
-Pois confsate, Marica,

nin confesores nin frades.
Adios, caria de rosa!

"Sleep yet a while, dearie,
Amid the gentle waves of the sea,
Sleep-for then you would caress me
And call out to me like a lover;
It's only with you, little girl,
That I can relax contented."
"Already the little birds sing;
Get up, my boon, it's late."
"Let them sing, Marica;
Marica, let them sing...
If you are sorry to see me go,
I rave for to stay."
"With me, my dearie,
You spent half the night."
"Still while you slept
I contented myself with gazing at you,
And as you slept, smiling between dreams,
I fancied that you were an angel;
And not with as much chastity
Would I've kept vigil at the feet of an angel."
"That's how I want you, my boon,
Like a saint upon the altar;
But depart..., the golden sun
Shows above the hilltops."
"I will, but give me a wee kiss
Before I slip away from you,
For I do not yet know how
Those rosy, sweet lips taste."
"I would with thousand fold love,
But I must go to confession
And it would be a great shame
To own so great a sin."
"Go to confession then, Marica,
But when they marry us well married,
Neither confessors nor friars
Will avail you any, little girl.
Good-bye, pretty rose face!"
"God keep you, guy!"

How Can I Depart
If I Love You?
The roosters sing to the dawning day;
Get up, my good, and go."
"How can I go, dearie;
How can I go and leave you?
"The burning tears fall
Like glittering beads
From your lovely dark eyes
To our clasped hands.
How can I depart if I love you?
How can I go and leave you
If you send me away with the tongue
Yet with the heart draw me near?
In a corner of your bed
You sheltered me fondly;
With your gentle, sweet heat
You warmed my cold feet;
And together we watched from here
Through the green foliage
How the moon tracked
Above the stands of pine.
How do you pretend that I leave you?
How can I stay away from you
If you are sweeter than honey
And milder than the flowers?"
"Darling wizard, dear bewitching wizard,
Wizard who made me fall in love with you,
Depart from here, darling wizard,
Before the sun rises."

In the middle of the road there was a stone
there was a stone in the middle of the road
there was a stone in the middle of the road
there was a stone.
CARLOS DRUMMOND DE ANDRADE

The roof is stone.
The walls are stone
and the night.
The ground is stone

The doors,

the air,
the windows,
the looks,

The hearts of men looking outwards
are
also
made of stone.
I too, dying
in this long night
of stone.

THE KINGDOM

Then,
when animals could talk,
to say freedom was not sad,
to say truth was like a river,
to say love,
to say friend,
was the same as referring to spring.
No one knew of insults.
When animals could talk,
men would sing in the evenings
of doves of light and goldfinches of dream.
To say yours and mine was not
comprehensible,
to say sword was prohibited,
to say prison was only a word
without meaning, a breath which missed
the heart of the people.

When,
when was it lost,
that great Kingdom?

O REINO
No tempo aquil
cando os animales falaban,
decir libert non era triste,
decir verd era coma un ro,
decir amor,
decir amigo,
era igual que nomear a primavera.
Ningun saba dos aldraxes.
Cando os animales falaban
os homes cantaban nos solpores
pombas de luz e xlgaros de soos.
Decir teu e meu non se entenda,
decir espada estaba prohibido,
decir prisin somente era unha verba
sin senso, un aire que mancaba
o corazn da xente.
Cando,
cando se perdeu,
iste gran Reino?

We wanted freely
to eat our daily bread. Freely
to bite it, chew it, fearlessly digest it,
freely talking, singing on the banks
of rivers freely running down to the
sea.
Freely, freely
we wanted only
to be freely men, to be stars,
to be sparks from the great fireplace of
the world,
to be ants, birds, boys,
in the Noahs ark on which we row.
We wanted freely to smile,
to speak of it to God in the passing
wind
in the long wind of the woods and
plains
without fear, without blackness,
without chains,
without sin, freely, freely,
like the air of the morning and spray.
Like the wind.
But this our difficult love was broken
the glass of a fragile dream
on a reef of screams

Behind the village

Behind the village Iour willows lie
One oI them is certainly mine
There I go when the night is coming
There I go when the night is coming

Behind the village Iour willows grow
When my tongue itches me, there I always go
Only to one oI them I conIess
Only to one oI them I conIess

This will never disclose,
what is on my heart
only she may guess,
what happens in my soul,
When here I go

II you are also Iull oI doubts
go and Iind the willow quite
go and Iind a hollow tree
go and Iind a hollow tree

Behind the village Iour willows bloom
II they cut mine, what would I do
Where would my soul Iind peace
Where would my soul Iind peace

Za dedinou

Za dedinou styri vby stoja,
jedna z nich je urcite ta moja,
ta ja chodim, ke sa zveceri.

Za dedinou rastu styri vby,
vzdy ta zajdem, ke ma jazyk svrbi,
iba jednej z nich sa zdverim.

Ta to nikdy nevyzradi,
co na srdci mam,
iba ona asi tusi,
co sa deje v mojej dusi,
ke sem chodievam.

Ak mas aj ty pochybnosti hbu,
tak si najdi mlcanlivu vbu,
tak si najdi stromcek butavy.

Za dedinou styri vby kvitnu,
co si pocnem, ak tu moju vytnu,
kde sa mojej dusi uavi?

Ta to nikdy nevyzradi,
co na srdci mam,
iba ona asi tusi,
co sa deje v mojej dusi,
ke sem chodievam.

Styri vby stali uz nestoja
nestoji tam uz ani ta Tvoja
dusu azi sumrak boavy.

Za dedinou styri vby stali
dodnes neviem preco ich vyali
kam ja pjdem, ke sa zveceri?

Pred polnocou ma neroztancujes

Biela jar pristane volnikom tulipnov,
ktor si odpykvaj trest za zvdnutie
pohodenm do nasuchorench pern.
Plavne zakrda sa tesenie. Mm rd tvoje nah
ramen,
ke po polnocnch sprchch medzi mrtiami
rozhadzujes lupienky smevov.
A mm rd tie tvoj chamtizn,
spla tka zlomen prahom predsienky
vzdy bez klopania vplva do tvojich obliniek,
ke vkroci chcem za tebou do svitu.
Postoj, mrska, mrkav tisce
o rozum stihla si uz pripravi ...

You wont make me dance before midnight

White spring suits well tulips frills,
which are serving their sentence for having passed
away
throwing into fluffing duvet.
The pleasure is slinking gracefully. I am fond of
your naked arms,
when after the midnight showers among fatal ends
you spread smilespetals.
And I like your greedy shadow too,
tiny light broken by the porchs doorsill
always enters without knocking and breezes into
your curves,
when I want to walk into the dawn to meet you.
Hold on, beautiful monster, clouds of thousand
youve already driven them crazy ...
