Shalom !
(Jessica Braginsky shares thoughts with us for this issue.) At this time of year I try to take stock of my personal growth. Have I achieved goals that I have set for myself? Am I living my values? Thanks to Hadassah, I am a little closer to answering yes than last year. One important value for me is a close connection to Israel. Israel is the one country that has as its primary mission to be a homeland for all Jews. Its existence gives me and all Jews security and pride. Hadassah has invested more than $1 billion dollars in Israel just over the past 15 years. Through Hadassah, I have participated in giving Israel the gift of two world class hospitals including the ground-breaking Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower which has been described by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat as one of the most important buildings in the city. Passing this connection and support of Israel to the next generation is another value that I hold dear. A recent weekend is a great example of how my affiliation with Hadassah helps me live this value. I picked up my son from Young Judaeas Camp Sprout Lake and was overwhelmed by the love of Israel I saw there. Israeli flags were all over, everywhere I heard the sound of Hebrew songs and people speaking Hebrew, Israeli(continued counselors work on Page 7)

Real Honey for Rosh Hashanah?
Chances are the honey you purchased to dip apples into on Rosh Hashanah is not truly honey. According to Food Safety News (www.foodsafetynews.com), which tested over 60 honey containers sold in 10 states and the District of Columbia, 76 percent of samples bought at groceries and 77 percent from large retail chain stores had all the pollen removed, which is the only re al way to identify the source of honey. All honey sold in drugstores and given out in fast food restaurants had been ultrafiltered, which heats, sometimes waters down and then filters the honey to remove pollen. This is different from traditional straining methods that retain pollen. Although the Food and Drug Administration states that any product without pollen is not honey, the FDA does not i nspect honey, and illegal, contaminated honey from Chinamany hiding unhealthy sweeteners and antibioticshas flooded the North American market. Vaughn Bryant, professor at Texas A&M University and a pollen expert who analyzed the 60 containers, found the full amount of pollen in every honey sample from farmers markets, food cooperatives and health stores like Trader Joes; 71 percent of organi c samples from major grocery chains passed the test. Raw, unprocessed honey that is harvested by beekeepers has medicinal properties and antiallergenic benefits. It contains nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants and appears in many varieties, depending on the flowers and plants where bees seek their nectar. Sara Trappler Spielman , Hadassah Magazine

Rich Boy by Sharon Pomerantz at the home of Susan Kass, 21 Beachway, PW Monday, November 11, 2013 8:00 p.m.
Robert Vishniak is the favored son of Oxford Circle, a working-class Jewish neighborhood in 1970s Philadelphia. Handsome and clever, Robert glides into the cloistered universities of New England, where scions of unimaginable wealth and influence stand shoulder to shoulder with scholarship paupers like himself who wash dishes for book money. The doors that open there lead Robert to the highest circles of Manhattan society during the heart of the Reagan boom where everything Robert has learned about women, through seduction and heartbreak, pays off. For a brief moment, he has it all-but the world in which he finds himself is not the world from which he comes, and a chance encounter with a beautiful girl from the old neighborhood-and the forgotten life she reawakens-threatens to unravel his carefully constructed new identity.

HEALTH
GMOs Are Everywhere
Like humans, all organisms have DNA, or genetic material. When scientists alter genetic material of an organism, its called genetic modification or GM. For nearly two decades, food manufacturers have increasingly relied on Genetically Modified Organisms as a way to, among other things, improve a plants resistance to pests and tolerance of herbicides, making them more apt to survive weather changes and increasing crop yield. In addition, GMOs are a cheap source of feed, which also reduces the overall cost of food production. Food manufacturers insist that genetically modified crops are safe because they have not been proven to cause harm or illness in humans. Meanwhile, most food-safety advocates argue that humans are being used as guinea pigs in consuming these products without proof that they are safe. The fact is, no one knows how safe these foods are. According to Bottom Line Health magazine, there are no published studies proving that GMOs are safe for human consumption, and results of animal studies are worrisome. Several animal studies suggest significant health risks, including infertility, immune problems and impaired insulin regulation. In the U.S, about 80% of packaged, processed foods and even some fresh foods, such as certain vegetables and fruits contain GMOs. Most fresh produce is GMO-free, but there are exceptions zucchini, yellow (crookneck) squash, Hawaiian papaya and sweet corn. These are the only vegetables and fruits in US groceries that can be genetically modified for now. So, what can you do? According to Jayson Colton, Ph.D. and expert nutritionist at Bottom Line Health, you should purchase dairy that is labeled USDA organic whenever possible. Organic dairy comes from animals that were not given GMO feed and ensures that the animals werent given antibiotics or hormones. Both are widely used in the US, even though antibiotics in animals are believed to promote antibiotic resistance in humans, and synthetic growth hormone has been linked to various types of cancer. Also, says Dr. Colton, eat wild-caught fish. Examples include Alaskan salmon, haddock, and Atlantic mackerel. Unfortunately you cant always find wild-caught fish in mainstream supermarkets. So, based on Bottom Line Health and Dr. Coltons research, the best way to play it safe is to avoid GMO foods whenever possible. Merle Colchamiro, Health Chair merlecolch@optonline.net

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
(continued from Cover Page) Hebrew, Israeli counselors worked alongside enthusiastic American counselors to mentor young campers. Later that same day I wished my niece a nessiya tovah (bon voyage) as she prepared to participate in Young Judaeas Year Course, a gap year program in Israel. I know this will be a special year of growth and learning for her. I was so glad to know that my participation in Hadassah has made these things happen. Even though Young Judaea is now a separate organization, Hadassah awarded over $280,000 in scholarships for Young Judaea summer camps and Israel programs this June. The scholarships enabled some 270 children and young adults to participate in YJ programs. A world at peace is something I pray for throughout the year. Hadassah enables me to bring this ideal one step closer. Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) provides medical care to over one million patients a year regardless of race, religion or nationality. How does this play out in a region known for conflict? Here is an example: Musab and Majd Alafandi were a young couple with everything to look forward to: they'd met through a cousin and had fallen in love right away. They married, and were delighted to be expecting their first child. Then their world turned upside down. Madj went to Ramallah for a routine ultrasound scan at 20 weeks. She could see something was wrong by the look on the doctor's face. He shook his head. He said he was sorry but their baby had exceptionally serious heart defects and would die before or immediately after birth. She was referred to Hadassah Hospital. At Hadassah Hospital's Ein Kerem campus, the baby was delivered and immediately rushed to the premature baby unit to await surgery. Named Abdul Nasser, after his grandfather, he underwent an extremely complex operation on his tiny heart. But it was discovered that Abdul Nasser had problems with his lungs too. And then, months into Abdul Nasser's care, as he breathed through a mechanical ventilator inserted through his trachea, one resident noticed the sick little boy was smiling. He pulled out his phone camera, and showed it around the unit like a proud uncle. "That was a turning point," said Dr. Toltzis, head of the PICU. "You can't believe how happy and encouraged that smile made us For us, it wouldn't have mattered what his background was, but we do have an additional sense of satisfaction that problems of area politics have not stood in the way of success." There was absolutely no difference in how our son was treated in the PICU from the way the Jewish children were treated," said Musab. "He was perhaps pampered more because the staff knew we were a little further from home and the grandparents couldn't often come." "Seeing Abdul Nasser alive, getting well and smiling makes us joyous, and keeps us in the PICU family doing what we do," said Dr. Toltzis. "That's why we're here, in intensive care. And thats why I am here in Hadassah. Wishing you and your family a year full of happiness, health and success. Shana Tova.

FUNDRAISING
A Great Evening A Wonderful Surprise
Sandsport/Shoshana Hadassah honored Peter Forman on July 11, 2013 with over 140 people enjoying a beautiful evening. Ellen and Richard Fox extended a gracious welcome to all as hosts. And, with the cooperation of the weather, members and friends happily toasted the honoree with signature Hadassah Hurricanes created by Jane Ronis, the caterer for the evening. Peter Formans foresight and energy built the coalition which became the Port Washington-Manhasset Office of Emergency Management. Thanks to his hard work, 40,000 people on the PW peninsula received up-to-the-minute assistance to survive the difficulties of superstorm Sandy. At the cocktail party, Peter was introduced by the honorary chair for the event, Pat Left to right: Leslie Browne, Chapter President; Peter Forman, Honoree; Foye, a Port Washington native and close friend of Peters. He Dorette Forman and Ali Forman is the Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Peter received honors from Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead and the excitement of having numerous politicians joining Hadassah to honor Peter added to the lively evening. But the best part was Peters announcement that he and his family were making a substantial donation to the building and furnishing of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower, the new, state-of-the-art facility at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. What convinced him to invest in Hadassah? The emergency preparedness that has been built into the new Tower - 5 floors of underground medical facilities including a parking garage that can be turned into operating bays and triage units L to R: Dorette Forman, Peter Forman, Honoree; and sealed off in case of a chemical attack.

U.S. Congress Proposes to Move U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem
Members of the US Congress have submitted legislation calling upon the United States to move her embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The bill, titled HR 2846: Recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel Act, which is sponsored by Trent Franks (AZ-08), Brad Sherman (CA-30), Doug Lamborn (CO-05), Gene Green (TX-29), and Juan Vargas (CA-51), is now being circulated among members of Congress. Earlier in the year, members of the House and Senate proposed a similar bill. The United States was the first nation to recognize Israels sovereignty, a mere 11 minutes after the new state was formed in 1948. Today, 65 years later, Israel remains a uniquely precious ally. Just as the United States has assisted the Jewish people in restoring their ancient state, it is only fitting that we lead the way in recognizing Jerusalem for what it is: the undivided, eternal capital of Israel, said Congressman Trent Franks. The text of HR 2846 recognizes that Jerusalem has been the undivided capital of the Jewish people for the last 3,000 years. It claims that Jews have had an uninterrupted presence in the city since antiquity and have constituted a majority of the citys residents since 1840. The bill cites that in 1990, Congress unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 106, which declares that Congress strongly believes that Jerusalem must remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic religious group are protected. HR 2846 also states that The United States maintains its embassy in the functioning capital in every country except in the State of Israel. The bill also recognizes that the government of Israel has met all of the standards for establishing a capital city according to the international law set forth by the 1907 Hague Regulations stating Israel has far exceeded the 1907 Hague Regulation as directed by international law. Israel has taken all measures to restore and ensure public order and safety in Jerusalem. Jerusalem has been far safer and more protected under Israels administration than under any previous authorities. It is long overdue for the US government to relocate our embassy to Israels capital, Jerusalem, said Congressman Brad Sherman. According to Congressman Doug Lamborn, For historical, biblical and moral reasons, we are committed to the unity of Jerusalem as Israels undivided capital with no waivers and no caveats. Our unflinching support is especially crucial at this critical hour of turbulence throughout the region.
Please contact Congressman Steve Israel (or your own congressional representative, if not in Port Washington) and tell him/her that you support HR 2846 the "Recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel Act." Sandy Lipset, IZAIA chair
