PYP Transdisciplinary Theme: Our World

Content description: Literacy Create short texts to explore, record and report ideas and events using familiar words and beginning writing knowledge Produce some lower case and upper case letters using learned letter formations (ACELY1653)(ACELY1651) Achievement Standard: By the end of the Foundation year, students identify and use rhyme, letter patterns and sounds in words. When writing, students use familiar words and phrases and images to convey ideas. Their writing shows evidence of sound and letter knowledge, beginning writing behaviours and experimentation with capital letters and full stops. They correctly form known upper- and lowercase letters.

Central Idea: Moving objects help people Line of Inquiry: Movement, design, impact of technologies. Guiding Questions: How do things move? How do they help us? Skills: Thinking, self management Learner Profiles: Communicators, knowledgeable Attitudes: Risk taker, commitment.

Content: Write about moving things in our classroom Experience: 1. Discuss our observation table and ask who has investigated the things that move & how they move? 2. Explain that there are lots and lots of things in our classroom that move and their design helps us in some way. Give an example ( the scissors discuss their movement and design & how they help us) 3. Ask for other suggestions discussing movement design & they usefulness. 4. Ask the children to go back to their desks and write and draw about 4 things in our class room that move & help us. (give them 5 mins to search) Assessment: Monitor the room for progress focussing on students identified as needing extra support. Ask question to spark thinking. Assist with sounding our and letter formation where needed. Early Finishers/Extension: Ask them to write about and explain the movement in more detail what allows them to move in that way? How is it joined together? Do you think its a good design? How is it useful? What would we do if this was not invented? Equity & Cross-Curricula Links:
