6 Chebyshevs Theorem and the Empirical Rule The theorem and the rule are used to make more precise statements regarding the percentage of data values that fall within a specified number of standard deviations from the mean. Chebyshevs Theorem Used to make statements about the proportion of observations that fall within certain intervals. Chebyshev found bounds for the proportion of the data that lie within a specified number of standard deviations from the mean. Theorem: For any data set, the proportion of observations that lie within k standard deviations from the mean is at least 1 1/k2, where k is any number greater than 1
