Weekly Write Rubric

POWERstandard CiW (Communication in Writing): Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

1Novice
The Weekly Write is less than 150 words, or the majority of the words do not add meaning. It may not be possible to assess student writing. The purpose of the writing is not clear. The focus of the writing is confusing or ambiguous. The writing is unimaginative or familiar and does not entertain or hold the interest of an invested reader.

2Partially Proficient
The Weekly Write is 150-200 words, or may be 200-250 words, but some of the writing does not add value to the overall work. The purpose of the writing (e.g., to relay information about the writer, to tell a fictional story, to review a book, etc.) is clear but the writing does not stay focused on this purpose. The writing includes some creative twists and variably entertains and holds the interest of an invested reader.

3Clearly Proficient
The Weekly Write is at least 250 words, and it is clear that the student is focused on the quality of the writing not only the length. The purpose of the writing is clear and focus is generally maintained throughout the work. The writing is original and usually entertains and holds the interest of an invested reader.

4Advanced, Exemplary
The Weekly Write is at least 250 words, and it is clear that the student is focused on the quality of the writing not only the length. The purpose of the writing is clearly focused and is maintained throughout the entire work. The writing is creative, well-developed, and imaginative, and consistently entertains andholds the interest of an invested reader.

POWERstandard SLU (Style and Language Usage): Use appropriate vocabulary, register, grammar, sentence structure, figurative language, spelling, and syntax to narrate, describe, analyze, evaluate, explain, argue, persuade, entertain, and express feelings.

1Novice
Vocabulary is distractingly repetitive, limited and/or inappropriate for purpose or writing. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar contains many regular errors that are distracting and interfere with meaning. Student does not always use periods and/or capitalize at the start of new sentences.

2Partially Proficient
Vocabulary is more appropriate for purpose of writing but is still limited and a bit repetitive. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar contains errors that may be distracting and interfere with meaning a little bit. Periods are used correctly. Capitalization is used at the beginning of new sentences.

3Clearly Proficient
Vocabulary is completely appropriate, and generally varied, demonstrating students growth with vocabulary. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar contains occasional errors, but these errors dont interfere with meaning Periods are used correctly. Student demonstrates knowledge of conventions (e.g., comma use, punctuation with quotes, etc.) that have been taught in class. Some variance in sentence structure, such as sentence length or the ways sentences start. Student uses adequate imagery and/or details/examples to illustrate content. Student uses figurative language taught in class.

4Advanced, Exemplary
Vocabulary is advanced for grade level and makes the writing very engaging/interesting. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar contains almost no/no errors. Student demonstrates knowledge of conventions not yet addressed in class.

Sentences have a predictable or repetitive structure. Student does not use imagery or does not include sufficient details/examples for reader to understand content.

Little variance in sentence structure. Student uses some imagery and/or details/examples to help reader better understand content.

Great variance in sentence structure. Writing has a unique voice. Student uses figurative language that has not yet been addressed in class.
