CHAPTER 6, THE STANDARD DEVIATION AS A RULER AND THE NORMAL MODEL, PART 3

October 4, 2013

DO NOW PICK 2

1)What are the characteristics of a normal model? 2)What is the 68-95-99.7 rule? 3)Write the z score formula using mu and sigma. Label all the variables.

AIM AND HOMEWORK

How do we find use standard deviation as a ruler and utilize the normal model? Homework: Read pages 114126, Complete page 130-131 #21-31ODD and 26 Turn in extra credit to the box before you leave!

VIDEO FROM YESTERDAY

RULES FOR WORKING WITH NORMAL MODELS

1) Draw a picture. 2) Draw a picture. 3) Draw a picture. Review: How do we sketch a Normal Curve? (Note: the inflection point is the point where the shape changes, exactly one standard deviation away.)

PRACTICE!!!
You took the SAT test, which has scores that lie in a unimodal and symmetric fashion. The mean on the test is 500 and the standard deviation is 100. Suppose you got a 600 on the Math Section. Where do you stand among other SAT students? Draw a picture! (600-500)/100 = 1.0 = z score 100%-68% = 32% are students who are outside the 1 standard deviation 32%/2 = 16% are above 1 standard deviation. 100%-16% means 600 is better then 84% of scores on the test.

HOW TO FIND NORMAL PERCENTILES

1) Draw a picture and shade in the region you want to find. 2) Use the z score formula if you know the mean and standard deviation.

1) Find the z score. 2) Use the table given to find the percentage based on the z score.

PRACTICE Think back to the SAT which approximates a normal curve and has a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 100. You score of 680 would be in what percentile? Draw picture! (680-500)/100 = 1.8 1.800 in the table 0.9541 -> 95.41%

PRACTICE
Using what you know about the SAT in the last problem, calculate the proportion of students who have scores between 450 and 600. (Clue: start by finding z-scores for both values, percentages, and then the difference. Draw a picture. Z= (600-500)/100 = 1.0 Z = (450-500)/100 = 1.0 Area (450 < y < 600) = Area (-0.5 < z < 1.0) 0.8413 0.3085 = 0.5328 or 53.28%

PRACTICE
Using what you know about the SAT in the last problem, calculate how high your SAT math score needs to be for you to be in the top 10%. (Clue: Find the percentile in your table and covert to a z score.) Draw a picture! You know that to score above 90% of other students, your z score will be positive. Find the value in your table closest to 0.900 z=1.28 (x-500)/100 = 1.28 Solving for x you will get 628.

PRACTICE
A company makes boxes with a mean weight of 16.3 ounces and a standard deviation of 0.2 ounces. The weight of boxes are distributed in the form of a normal model. Find the proportion of boxes that weigh less then 16 ounces. Draw a picture! (16 16.3)/0.2 = -1.50 Area (y<16) = Area (z<-1.50) = 0.0668 6.68% of boxes are less then 16 ounces!
