Project 2: Response to Bill Clinton

ASSIGNMENT
Watch the whole Bill Clinton video (you received it in an email) on BIG IDEAS in education. Respond to ONE of the BIG IDEAS he discusses: a) putting all girls in school, b) No Child Left Behind or c) copying the 20 best schools in the country. Decide on your subject by picking the one you want to learn more about. This assignment is based an argument FOR or AGAINST the point he makes in the video. Be sure to look at chapter 10 in Writing Today to include all the parts of an argument in the text part of this assignment. Remember that you will need to summarize Clintons points before going into your own. USE THE FLOW CHART ON PAGE 198. The project you are handing in is an opt-ed piece for an online magazine responding to Clinton. Include at least 2 kinds of multimedia. Hand-in the link to the piece you publish using either an online blog site (which allows pictures, like wordpress.com) or a website (like weebly.com).

RHETORICAL AUDIENCE
Consider the type of audience your choice of blog/magazine would have. Are you choosing to write for a very liberal/conservative type of blog/magazine? Is it one that is already popular or one that is little known? How would those facts affect the kinds of words/expressions you use? What kind of media will your kind of audience expect? How will you make your online project appear like the publication you have in mind?

MUSTS
At least two multimedia components (see hints, below). Text should be 1000-1200 words. Reference at least THREE pieces of research in the written . They can be readings from the course, or research of your own finding pertaining to the topic you have chosen. CITE your sources. Bibliography at the end of your publication, formatted in the style of your choosing. Reflection must be included with this essay. Keep your reflection to 1-2 paragraphs. Use the course SLOs to guide your comments. NO GRADE GIVEN without a reflection.

HINTS
Be sure to use references to the other readings we have been doing and discussions weve been having as well as any sources you have found in researching your chosen BIG IDEA. Media you could include in your online publication: words/quotes you think apply in bold, bigger links/embedded video clips of yourself/others links/embedded voice-over quotations from yourself/others/famous individuals photos, current or historical sound effects artwork/paintings that convey your message captions text boxes links to other sites etc. Use your projects (in this class, and in others) in order to learn something new. You dont have to either agree or disagree with Clinton at the outset of the project. You do have to make an effort to research the facts on the BIG IDEA you choose to discuss (girls in school/No Child Left Behind or the 20 top schools). Choose the topic to which you want to respond based on what you want to learn more about. Perhaps one of the readings from class has already gotten your attention-- is there a way to integrate it into your project? Develop your opinion/take on the point you have chosen after you have considered other research and the course readings.
