1. ORGANIZATIONAL CHECKLIST

Classroom Rules and Procedures Obtain from TA beforehand What are the norms of the school? (Find out in orientation) School Facilities and Equipment 2 music rooms 2 practice rooms Teacher workroom with desk (my space) Large Auditorium with stage and full sound systems 3 sets of risers for both music rooms and auditorium Instruments (incd reeds, ligatures, mouth pieces etc) supplied to students Every student has their own laptop/tablet School Policies and Procedures Fire Drill (alarm sounds, exit to the Hardcourt, teachers take emergency pack, line up by advisory, advisors take attendance, all clear or fall back signal given) Lockdown Procedure (Keep all occupants in the room silent, appear vacant, close doors lock if possible, away from windows, close blinds, get on floor, take cover if possible, no phone use can be used, close tablets, switch off smart boards, teachers use computer to access information from Crisis management team, teachers record absences, remain in the room until notified verbally by a warden) Procedures for each type of drill, exit locations and warning signals will be located in a folder beside each door in each room. If a teacher is not present in the room a student should remove the information and follow the procedure. Teachers should review each procedure with each class to alert then to the steps to follow and locations to move.

All teachers are required to monitor students throughout each procedure to maintain quiet and to keep students together. Organizing Classroom, Materials and Supplies Ask TA about how their classroom works/is run (layout) Bring in my own flute Have SMARTlessons/ppts ready on laptop before class Have conductors pencils if students forget Have classroom (chairs, SMART board, etc) prepared before students come in Extra paper for guided listenings, reactions, journals, & exit slips

Start-of-Class Procedure - Play a new piece at the start of class - Practice attention getters - Go over the classroom norms - Introduce yourself 3. Question-Answering Procedure - Raising hands - Other students should be listening respectfully - Wait until you are called upon 5. Safety Procedures - Go over directional instruments (no blasting and why)/instruments as weapons) - How to properly put down your instrument if you have to leave 6. Other Procedures: homework, lateness, absence, personal electronic devices (iPods, cell phones-secondary level) materials and equipment, cleanup, transition, announcements, etc.
- Do announcements and attendance at the beginning of class - Talk to the TA about their procedures - All instruments must be put away properly - lateness/absence added to the class checklist - ipods/phones can be used on the break only. They must be away when learning/teaching is happening
Explanation of Class Procedures (and how they will be taught and reinforced): - Warnings/Strikes - Will be gone over at the beginning of class every once in a while. - Reminders acting as a warning
4. INTERVENTION PLAN
Strategies for Responding to Misbehavior: 1. Moving closer to the offending students (proximity) (minor) 2. The Look (minor) 3. Calmly ask the student(s) to remain after class. (Severe) 4. Do not delay in addressing behavior problems, things will only get worse. (Severe) 5. When meeting with the student, BEGIN by listening carefully to what the student has to say and try to understand what is motivating this behavior. THEN present your side of the story. Continue the discussion until you arrive at a mutually agreeable solution. Justification/Explanation of Strategies: - use different strategies between minor and severe misbehavior.
