Laser Cutting and Engraving - CE Conformity

Last Updated Friday, 07 August 2009

Laser Cutting / Engraving Machines have increased in popularity within D&T rooms across the country, and the volume of product sold continues to increase. However, it appears that some products that are offered for sale to UK schools may not conform to Health and Safety standards and, most importantly, the current CE directive. Buyers are often focused on price, but issues relating to CE marking need to be a major consideration when purchasing a Laser Cutter / Engraver. CE marking is mandatory for all products sold within the 27 countries of the European Union and guarantees that the product has been risk assessed prior to manufacture. VersaLASER VLS

When schools are in the process of selecting a Laser Cutting Machine, all suppliers should be in a position to confirm that the Machine (and fume extraction cart) is CE marked and Health & Safety and Control Measures are in place. This will include a detailed guide to the safety features relating to the technology, including a statement about the appropriate labeling of the machines. In addition, a detailed Risk Assessment document should be available. The Risk Assessment document will be specific to the laser model and type and cover suitability for educational purposes, and will include items such as general safety, safety labeling, safety features, safety control measures, and risk assessment & immediate remedial measures. All Laser Engraving Machines supplied by Denford Ltd comply with the above. The Versalaser and Advantage Fume Extraction Cart have all the required safety features to comply with British Standards and CE directives. This includes a Class 1 safety enclosure for the CO2 laser beam and red dot laser pointer. The Versalaser is also WEEE and RoHS compliant. The VLS2.30 and 3.50 models are fully portable and can be stored away when not in use. Additional safety features include and Over Temperature Sensor with Audible Alarm, Safety Glass, Automatic Accessory Recognition and Smart Technology ULR laser cartridges, which can be easily changed by a Technician. The Versalaser is available with 10, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 60 watts of laser power, and is available in a variety of colours!
