MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar across the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. Chemical reaction will occur between the vinegar and the eggshell, making the vinegar possible to get to the eggshell. The vinegar will flow across the membrane and into the egg because there is 95% of water in the vinegar and 74% of water in the egg so that means the egg has a lower concentration of water in it. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 16 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles 50 ml displaced Eggshell partially dissolved 70 ml displaced Foam on egg and at waterline Vinegar smells worse but weaker than before Can see some yolk All of the eggshell dissolved 90 ml displaced Not much foam anymore You can the yolk (tinted yellow) Looks like a water balloon

CONCLUSION: In this lab, we were investigating how osmosis will effect which way the water will flow when an egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar. By the 4th day, our groups egg had displaced 90ml, expanding 2.5cm in average over the course of 4 days. This shows that the water is flowing into the egg through a selectively permeable membrane from high concentration area to a low concentration area.

The average expansion of the 7th grade is 2.7cm compared to period 1s total expansion, which is 2.6cm. I hypothesized that the water molecules will flow into the egg. My hypothesis is 100% correct. ANALYSIS The eggshell started dissolved when it came in contact with the vinegar. The reason for this is because it is a calcium carbonate, and the vinegar is weak acid. When these two substances touch, the water goes through a selectively permeable membrane and that creates a chemical reaction causing the eggshell to dissolve. The difference in expansion of the eggs between period 7 group 3 and group 7 is 3.4 cm. These groups got difference results because one can start out bigger than the other one. Cells need water because water provides nutrients and also provides energy for the cell to regulate properly.
