MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250 mL of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of lower concentration causing the egg to expand THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I know that the water will flow into the egg because the concentration of water is greater in vinegar than in an egg. This is because 95% percent of vinegar is water and only 74% of an egg is water and that means that the vinegar has the higher concentration of water and the egg has the lower concentration of water. This is how I know that the water will flow into the egg. For osmosis to occur, the egg would be placed in the vinegar and the shell would dissolve, revealing the cell membrane making it easier for osmosis to happen. The egg will become larger and more vulnerable showing that the egg would have the water molecules moving from the vinegar to the egg. This is how I know that the water will flow into the egg, not out of the egg. PROCEDURE: Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. Record observations. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300 with egg in OBSERVATIONS - Bubbles on eggshell - 50 mL displacement - 200 liquid level without

AVERAGE EXPANSION: COMPARISON

4 3.5 EXPANSION COMPARISON IN cm 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 TABLE 1 PERIOD 2 GRADE 7 AVERAGE EXPANSION

CONCLUSION In this lab we observed osmosis. Over the period of 4 days, our groups egg expanded 3.5 cm. Compared to the whole class, our egg expanded 0.6 cm more than the class average, which was only 2.9 cm. Compared to the whole 7th grade average (2.7. cm) we had 0.8 cm more expansion. In this lab I hypothesized that the egg would expand. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS The egg shell dissolved because, when the egg was put into vinegar osmosis was occurring and the higher place of water concentration would have to go through a selectively permeable membrane to get to the area of lower concentration. In period 7 group 3, their egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days. Compared to group 7 which only expanded 1.1 cm. The difference between the two groups is exactly 3.4 cm. Cells need water to be able to function and keep their shape. Another reason why cells need water is because, like any other living thing, water is necessary because they need to stay healthy and not dehydrate.
