MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg form an area of high concentration though the membrane into an area of low concentration. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. My hypothesis said that the water in vinegar would flow into the egg. This is because vinegar is made of 95% concentration of water and the egg is only 74% water. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. CONCLUSION During this lab we explored the theory of osmosis. At the end of day four, water molecules had moved from the high concentrated vinegar to the selectively permeable membrane of the low concentrated egg. Our egg had expanded 2.8 cm. This was .1 more then the seventh grade average. I hypothesized that the water from the vinegar would flow into the egg my hypothesis was correct.

ANALYSIS 1. The eggshell dissolved because the shell is mostly made out of calcium carbonate, this will dissolve very quickly. Once the egg has its shell off the water in the vinegar will slowly move throw the selectively permeable membrane into the egg. 2. In seventh period group 3s egg expanded 4.5 cm after four day, on the other hand group sevens egg expanded 1.1 cm. The difference in expansion between these two eggs is 3.4. I infer that these results are different because there original size may have been dissimilar. The distance divided by the time equaled 3.636363 for group 7; the answer for group 3 was 1.1. What does this mean? This means that group sevens egg grew 3.636363.. per day, and group threes egg grew 1.1 each day finish later. 3. Cells need water because it cares out most chemical reactions, it also makes up of most of our bodies.
