The student understands important symbols, customs, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles and contribute to our national identity. The student is expected to: (B) recite and explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag and the Pledge to the Texas Flag. OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to recite and explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag. (For class: I can recite and explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance.) 2. BIG UNDERSTANDING: Citizenship. The student understands important symbols, customs, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles and contribute to our national identity. 3. ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Students will self assess each other in groups of 3-4 at the end of class by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Then I will ask each group to stand up and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to me. While students wait their groups turn to recite the Pledge of Allegiance I will have the rest of the class write one sentence on what they learned on The Pledge of Allegiance and why it is important. 4. Opening Hook: A youtube video of children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. (Video: Daycare children say Pledge of Allegiance.) 5. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/ STUDENT ACTIVITIES INPUT: Students will recite the Pledge of Allegiance correctly Students will need to know how to place the scrambled up picture cards of the Pledge of Allegiance in order so that they can recite the Pledge of Allegiance correctly.

MODELING: I will model the correct way to recite the Pledge of Allegiance by standing up straight, not talking, right hand on the heart, feet together, and looking at the flag. I will talk the students through the picture card activity explaining that students must work in groups of 4 to place the picture cards in correct order so that the Pledge of Allegiance is in correct order.

Holly McConoghy GUIDED PRACTICE/ MONITORING: While the youtube video of the Pledge of Allegiance is playing I will monitor students reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to see if they are standing up straight, not talking, right hand on the heart, feet together, and looking up at the flag. I will monitor the students by walking around the classroom and making sure they are staying on task and completing the assignment correctly.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: I will check for understanding by grading their Pledge of Allegiance picture cards, making sure they are put in order. Students will also recite the Pledge of Allegiance to their group and I will also listen to each group. I will also check for understanding by asking students what they learned and having them write one sentence about why the Pledge of Allegiance is important. 6. MATERIALS/RESOURCES: For the hook I will use a video of children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. For the input I will go over what the Pledge of Allegiance means. Next students will be placed in groups of 4. They will open up an envelope with the Pledge of Allegiance picture cards out of order. They will need to work as a group to put the Pledge of Allegiance picture cards in order. 7. GROUPING PATTERNS: I will have the class work in groups of 4 to complete the days project of placing the Pledge of Allegiance picture cards in order. Next I will have students work in groups of 4 to self assess each other on reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Then I will have students work separately at the end of class to write one sentence as to why the Pledge of Allegiance is important. 8. ENDING, SUMMARY/REFLECTION: I will ask the students what they learned today. I will ask them to write one sentence as to why is it important to know the Pledge of Allegiance.
