Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Reading Standards for Literature Grades 9-10: Craft and Structure determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, analyze how an authors choices concerning how to .manipulate time (flashbacks) creates an effect, analyze a particular point of view is reflected in the text. Reading standards for Informational Texts: Key Ideas and Details - determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text. identify what the text says explicitly as well as implicitly, determine central ideas and supporting details. Writing Standards for 9-10: introduce a topic, organize ideas, develop the topic, provide a concluding statement, use narrative techniques such as dialogue and pacing to develop plot and character.

This Week: Quiz on Afghani history as it relates to the Kite Runner, Flashback narrative, Vocab Tests, Comprehension and Analytical questions regarding Time Magazine Articles Unit:

TUESDAY Learning Target- Testing Students will identify main ideas in a news article and show comprehension by paraphrasing each paragraph. Students will identify main ideas in a news article and show comprehension of main ideas by answering questions about the article.

Assignment(s) Due- Testing Those students not testing will read two articles on chimps. The articles are extensions of a feature article students read about chimps in Time Magazine. Students will fill out a worksheet paraphrasing each paragraph in the first article. Students will answer questions to identify main ideas in the second article. They will also evaluate the situation and form an opinion about what happened in the article.

WEDNESDAY Learning Target Testing Same as the day before. THURSDAY Learning Target Students will identify definitions of academic vocabulary and show understanding by using them appropriately in sentences

Assignment(s) DueStudents will complete Lesson 5 of College Bound Vocabulary Unit.

FRIDAY Learning TargetStudents will identify main ideas in a novel and show their comprehension by summarizing paragraphs and by answering questions. .

Students will review new vocabulary before they read the Kite Runner. Students will read from The Kite Runner, then summarize paragraphs and answer questions that require comprehension of main ideas.
