Grade Twelve Homework Drawings

The purpose of these sketchbook assignments is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and mastery of skills, conceptsand techniques learned in class, as well as to developyour own way of expressing creative thoughts. Sketchbook assignments offer guided practice to show proficiency in drawing, shading, compositional skills, as well as the understanding and application of the elements of art and the principles of design. These assignments encourage you to look closer at the world around you, use your imagination and to explore ideas and techniques that interest, challenge and stimulate you. In addition to the required sketchbook assignments, you will be expected to use your sketchbook for preparatory drawings, thumbnails and experimentation as a means of documenting and developing your creative process for major studio assignments. Please be sure to bring your sketchbook with you regularly to class.

You must complete TEN of the following minor drawing assignments in your sketchbook.
All sketches submitted for evaluation should be labelled on the BACK of the page with the following information: Your name Date of submission Title of sketch (to identify assignment)

Draw a self portrait that not only captures a physical likeness but also captures your character. Draw a figure or object from real life and suggest the volume of the figure using lines that suggest topography. Set up a still life that includes at least one reflective object and draw that still life using many values. Draw breath Draw your body surrounded with or consumed by a phobia. Draw the idea of one of the following words: in-between, meantime, while, indefinite. Put a twist on a clichd image. Combine an animal and a machine to create a hybrid subject. Create a contemporary Rococo piece without appropriating any imagery.

11. Create a composition based on an illustrated manual (i.e. DVD player or iPod

manual).

12. Using pattern and repetition, draw a comparison between two objects or ideas.

For example, a bees honeycomb and a building complex OR a wrought iron fence and a lace dress. Be certain to illustrate the transition of thought from one object to the other.

13. Create a composition that compares the body and architecture. 14. Cut out or print out a classified ad and illustrate it. Try to expand visually what is

actually written.

15. Using OLD textbooks or storybooks, cut out a figure or figures and create a

background which re-contextualizes the figure.

16. Using pencil crayons, create a drawing about consumption at the mall. 17. Create a drawing that suggests movement. 18. Draw a edible item and make it look delicious. 19. Cut up the elements of an old photograph and rearrange them to create a

new composition. Draw the new composition.

20. Lie on the floor and draw what you see at eye level. 21. Think of something that you absolutely hate and create a technically beautiful

drawing of it.

Homework drawings may be completed in the order of your choosing and submitted as completed for feedback. The first FIVE drawings will be formally submitted prior to mid-term reports. The final FIVE drawings will be formally submitted prior to the end of the semester. Be sure to budget your time accordingly.
