LESSON OBJECTIVES: Students will understand the purpose of trading during addition sums and the importance of place value for this purpose. They will develop the skills to be able to complete this process with a variety of two-digit sums. LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time 10 mins Introduction (Set): Watch the tutorial video Addition of two-digit numbers with trading from the study ladder website. Discuss with students how to trade from units to tens. Complete 2 or 3 examples on the board, depending on students level of understanding more examples may be required. Resources Smartboard Studyladder access

Time 30 mins

Main Content: Ask students to complete first page on addition with trading in their Maths Activities Semester 2 booklet. Go through the answer as a class, have students come up to the board to show how they worked out their answers. Demonstrate any difficult questions and work through as a class. Repeat for pages 2 and 3 in the work booklet. Math activities work booklet White board

Conclusion: Reflect on how to do the sums with trading. Reinforce the importance of writing clearly and placing each number in its correct place value. Whiteboard

One of the students has learning difficulties and as a result is more suited to complete basic addition with counters. This student has their own work booklet with activities suited to their capabilities. Student participates in introduction and conclusion of lessons however completes own work during the body.

ASSESSMENT
Student assessment is formative and consists of observation, discussion and final production of work samples.

Reflection
Students were very capable of the task asked of them. My initial expectations of their capabilities were challenged when students adopted the process immediately and were successful in their learning so quickly. The only issues encountered were when students were writing the numbers in the wrong place mixing their place value; this was addressed at the end of the lesson after I noticed 3 students doing the same thing. I believe students will only need one more lesson just to consolidate their learning on the topic.

Main Content: Math game; students are given a blank sums sheet. They are required to work in groups of 4. Each student takes a turn to roll a die (preferably 10 sided but 6 sided still works) Students record each number that is rolled until they have a question. Math activities work booklet White board

Students then answer the question using addition. If they had to trade to answer the question they must then place a circle around that sum.

Time

Conclusion: Students return to the floor. Asks students to give examples of sums they made and answered with trading. Write the sum on the board and answer as a class to check if trading was involved. Do one from each group. Whiteboard

The lesson went well. Students were competent and engaged in the activity the whole lesson. They listened well and were eager to share their findings with the class. I would use this lesson again in future classes and just modify for student ability.

Reflection
Students worked well throughout but seemed to find subtracting more difficult than the addition. We focused more on the trading and how you had to borrow from the tens column. After several examples students were able to complete the task individually. The next lesson we will focus on completing a larger variety of sums just to reinforce the process of trading during subtraction.

Time 10 mins Introduction (Set): Re-Watch the tutorial video Subtraction of two-digit numbers with trading from the study ladder website. Discuss with students how to trade from units to tens. Complete 2 or 3 examples on the board, depending on students level of understanding more examples may be required. Go over the previous lesson; highlight the importance of checking before borrowing because sometimes you do not need to borrow. Resources Smartboard Studyladder access

Students were very successful in this lesson and worked extremely well throughout. They appeared to have grasped the concept and were looking for more challenging questions. I believe they understood the concept and will be able to successful complete subtraction tasks in the future.
