UNITCHALLENGE
Purpose:Theunitchallengeshelpstudentsexplorethebigpicturethemesthattietogethereachunitof Ignite!content.ThesechallengesaredesignedtocomplementtheIgnite!TopicLessons.

Eachchallengepresentsstudentswithanopenendedtaskwithnosinglecorrectsolution.Workingin smallgroups,studentsprepareashortresponse,ineitherwrittenororalform,inwhichtheyuse knowledgegainedbystudyingtheunitsmultimediamoviestoformulateanddefendaparticularposition. Theseresponsescanbeusedtostimulatefurtherclassdiscussionandexplorationoftheissues. NOTE:InordertousethisactivitywithyourclassforaparticularIgnite!unit,youshouldplanon havingstudentsstudytheIgnite!moviesfrommostofthetopicsinthatunit.Otherwise,students willnothaveenoughinformationtocompletethechallengeactivity.

Classtimerequired: 15minutesatthestartofunittoorganizestudentsintogroupsandreviewthechallenge,andfor thegroupstodiscussandrecordtheirinitialthoughtsandcurrentknowledgeoftheissues. 20minutesattheendoftheunitforstudentgroupstocompletetheirresponsestothechallenge. Optional:2030minutesforstudentgroupstopresenttheirresponsestotheclass.

AttheStartoftheUnit:Beforestudyinganyoftheunitstopicsormovies: 1. divideyourclassintoteamsof3to4students 2. reproducetheunitchallengeworksheetanddistributetostudents 3. decidewhetherteamswillgiveoralpresentationsand/orwrittenstatementsinresponsetotheir challenge 4. readthechallenge(s)outloudandmakesurethatalltermsandconceptsareunderstood 5. askgroupstocompletePartOneoftheirworksheets(GettingStarted).Theyshoulddiscussand writedowntheirthoughts,basedontheircurrentknowledgeforhowtheymightrespondtothe selectedchallenge. WhiletheClassStudiestheUnitsTopics:Overthenextfewdaysorweeks,asyouareusingtheIgnite! TopicLessonsforthisunit,occasionallyremindstudentstorecordontheirworksheetsanyinformation theyhavefoundintheIgnite!moviesthatmighthelpthemtodeveloporsupporttheirresponsetothe challenge.TheyshouldrecordthisinformationinPartTwooftheirworksheets(TakingNotes). AfterCompletingtheLastTopicoftheUnit:Giveyourstudents20minutestodiscussandwriteuptheir responsetothechallenge.TheycanusethespaceprovidedinPartThreeoftheirworksheets(Preparing YourResponse).Youmightconsiderallowingthemtoreviewsomeofthemoviesfromtheunit.Then, havestudentsgivebriefpresentationsoftheirresponses(2to3minuteseach)and/orsubmittheirwritten responses.
