HIGHWAY NETWORK IN ROORKEE

National Highway 58 (NH 58) links Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh near New Delhi with Badrinath and Mana Pass in Uttarakhand near Indo-Tibet border. 538 km (334 mi) highway starts from Mana village near Indo-Tibet border north of Badrinath temple and passes through Badrinath, Joshimath, Chamoli, Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Srinagar, Devprayag, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Roorkee, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Modinagar and ends at Ghaziabad near the border with Delhi. Of its total length, the NH 58 traverses 165 km (103 mi) in Uttar Pradesh and 373 km (232 mi) in Uttarakhand.

National Highway 73 (NH 73) Connects Roorkee in Uttarakhand to Panchkula in Haryana.

188 km long. It covers a distance of 108 km in Haryana, 59 km in Uttar Pradesh and 21 km in Uttarakhand.

INCREASED TRAFFIC

Significant increase in the ownership of four wheelers (due to increase in economic status) contributes in traffic congestion.

ANALYSIS & FINDINGS

There is no segregation between vehicular & pedestrian areas , therefore there emerges an immediate need to segregate the vehicular & pedestrian roads , also proper sidewalks/footpaths need to be provided in order to ease the traffic flow. Encroachment needs to be checked as they decrease the effective right of way of the road. Properly designated parking spaces need to be provided at areas with heavy commercial activities. Proper checkpoints for traffic control must be provided at important junctions. Medians should be provided at major roads. Road intersections should be redesigned, in order to ease the traffic flow around important junctions as there is a lot of mixed traffic i.e. pedestrian, motorized, nonmotorized and heavy vehicles (buses, trucks etc.) There is a need for a circulation plan. Also, a bypass should be provided.
