DESIGN CALCULATIONS OF STORAGE TANK

According to API 650 Code, 11th Edition Project: Design Check on Shell Courses
A. GEOMETRIC DATA Inside Diameter Tank Height Specific Gravity, S.G (Design) = 11,077 mm = 11, 000 mm = 1.00

B. SHELL THICKNESS CALCULATION BY ONE-FOOT METHOD Specification is according to API 650 Cl. 5.6.1 Design Shell thickness (mm) is given by: ( )

Whereby: td D H c.a Sd = Design shell thickness, in mm = Nominal tank diameter, in m = Design liquid level, in m = Corrosion allowance in mm = Allowable stress for the design condition, MPa = 11, 077 m = Assume 11, 000 m for calculation = Assume 1.6 mm (NFPA 22) = 103.43 MPa

D. INTERMEDIATE WIND GIRDER CALCULATION Top curb angle is 75 x 75 x 6 mm for shell greater than 5 mm The maximum height of the unstiffened shell shall be calculated as follows: ( ) (

H1 = vertical distance, in m, between the intermediate wind girder and top angle of the shell or the top wind girder of an open-top tank D =Nominal diameter V = Design wind speed. Km/h t = as built thickness, unless otherwise specified, of the thinnest shell course, mm = 11.077 m = 280 Km/h = 6 mm

E. CHECK ON INTERMEDIATE WIND GIRDER The transposed width of each shell course mm is calculated by: ( Where Wtr = transposed width of each shell course, mm W = actual width of each shell course, mm tuniform = as-built thickness, unless specified, of the thinnest shell course, mm tactual = as-built thickness, unless otherwise specified of the shell course for which the transposed width is being calculated, mm Shell Course 1 2 3 4 5 Shell thickness incl. c.a, mm 8 8 6 6 6 Actual width W(mm) 2000 2000 2000 2000 2000 Transposed width Wtr(mm) 974.28 974.28 2000.00 2000.00 2000.00 )

SUM OF TRANSPOSED WIDTH, H2

Cl. 5.9.7.3 from API states that if the height of the transformed shell is GREATER than the maximum height, H1, an intermediate wind girder is required. Hence since, H2 < H1, no intermediate wind girders are required.

F. BOTTOM PLATES NFPA 22 According to Cl. 5.5.4, under table 5.5.4.1(b): Depth of water: Thickness: approximately 11.00 m 6.4 mm, USE 8 mm for bottom plates
