Nazi Hate Gabby and her family left for Caputh to stay at the lake.

Part of the reason was to get away from Hitlers SAs for goodness sake. Gabby loved to read and was appalled when the books were taken. Watching the books being turned over to the Nazi followers made her heart start aching. When the pile of books were set on fire, Gabby felt as if she were in a boiling cauldron of insane hate. She tried to warn Ulla of Karl but her love had grown so deep, Gabby knew she was too late. The word anti-Semitism means prejudice against or hatred of Jews. The Holocaust, historys most extreme example of anti-Semitism, was all the news. Karls parents were Nazis and Karl was definitely a Nazi too. Ulla stayed behind while Hessie said, Ill look after her; now get in the car, all of you.
