Mole Quantities Lab

Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. 1) Measure the mass of the teaspoon 2) Put aluminum in the spoon and level it out 3) Measure the mass of the teaspoon with the aluminum 4) Subtract the mass of the teaspoon from that measurement to get the mass of only aluminum 5) Use dimensional analysis to convert the grams to moles to atoms B. teaspoon mass: 1.972 g spoon + aluminum mass: 4.396 g aluminum mass: 2.424 g C. 2.424 g Al * 1 mole * 6.02 * 10^23 atoms = 5.41 * 10^22 atoms 26.98 g 1 mole Concluding Statement: One teaspoon of aluminum contains about 5.41 * 10^22 Al atoms. 2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. 1) Measure the mass of the spoon 2) Put the iron in the spoon 3) Use dimensional analysis to find out how many grams are in 1 mol of iron powder 4) Use the ratio of the iron mass to mols to find out the number of teaspoons in 1 mol of iron poweder. B. teaspoon mass: 1.967 g spoon + iron mass: 11. 819 g iron mass: 7.423 g C. 1 mol Fe = 55.845 g 55.845 g 7.423 g = 7.52323858 Concluding Statement: About 7.523 teaspoons are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. 1) Measure the dimensions of the zinc strip 2) Measure the mass of the zinc strip 3) Use dimensional analysis to figure out what the mass of a 2.00cm^2 piece of zinc metal would be (in grams) 4) Use dimensional analysis to convert the grams into moles and then into atoms

B. zinc strip: 4.87 cm by 1.00 cm zinc mass: 0.584 g C. 0.584 g * 2.00 cm^2 = 0.240 g Zn 4.87 cm^2 0.240 g Zn * 1 mole * 6.02 * 10^23 atoms = 2.21 * 10^21 atoms 65.39 g 1 mole Concluding Statement: There are 2.21 * 10^21 atoms in a 2.00 cm^2 piece of zinc metal. 4. Assuming that baby oil is C23H48, Determine the volume of baby oil that would provide 6.00 x 1022 molecules of oil

A. 1) Measure out 1mL of baby oil 2) Measure the mass of the 1mL of baby oil 3) Convert 6.00 * 1022 molecules into moles than into grams 4) Use the ratio of mL to g to find out how many mL would provide 6.00 x 1022 molecules of oil B. 1 mL baby oil mass: 0.792 g C. 6.00 * 1022 molecules * 1 mol * 23x12.011 + 1.00x48 g = 3.30 * 10^-18 g 6.02 * 10^23 molecules 1 mol 3.30 * 10^-18 g / 0.792 = 4.17 * 10^-18 mL Concluding Statement: 4.17 * 10^-18 mL would provide 6.00 * 1022 molecules of oil 5. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. A. 1) Measure the length of a piece of copper wire and the mass of that wire. 2) Using dimensional analysis, find out the mass in grams of 2.00 mol of copper. 3) Using dimensional analysis, use this mass in grams and find the corresponding length. B. copper length: 1.08 cm copper mass: 1.878 g C. 2.00 mol Cu * 63.55 g = 127.1 g 1 mol 1.08 cm * 127 g = 73.0 cm 1.878 g Concluding Statement: About 73 cm of copper wire would be needed for 2.00 mol of copper.
