1. A) Does Newtons law of viscosity, shown below, hold for non-Newtonian fluids such as mayonnaise or molten plastics? Explain.

yz =

dvz dy

Answer: No. for non-Newtonian fluids, viscosity is dependent on shear rate. So, shear stress-shear rate relationship is non-linear. B) Glycerol is a Newtonian fluid, and its viscosity is 1.069 Pa.s. If glycerol is sheared, as shown below, at a shear rate (shear rate = dvz/dy) of 1.5 s-1, what is the value of the shear stress yz that will be generated? Please give your answer in Pa. Drive an equation relating the velocity to the distance between the plates.

Answer:

yz =

dvz = -1.5*1.069 = -1.603 Pa dy

dvz/dy = 1.5 dvz = 1.5 dy By integrating, vz = 1.5 y +C , B.C.: v(y=0) = 5 vz = 1.5 y + 5

A 0.5-meter deep container filled with a fluid. If the pressure on the bottom of the container is 168x 103 Pa, do you think this fluid is Nitrogen, Water, or Mercury? Answer: P = Patm + gh = (p-Patm)/(gh) = (168000-101325)/(9.8*0.5) = 13700 kg/m3 Therefore, the fluid is Mercury.

2. Calculate the pressure drop in the following pipe, taking into account the frictional losses to be 10 J/kg. The fluid density is 900 kg/m3 and the flow is at a steady state. Assume that the flow is laminar.

Answer: 1/2 (v22-v12) + gz + p/ +F +Ws = 0 =0.5 (Laminar), Ws = 0 v2A2=v1A1 v2[ (0.5r1)2] = v1 r12 v2 = 4v1 = 4 m/s -[(1/2*.5)(16-1)+9.8*10+10]*900 = p p = -110750 pa
