Eriel Knight Ms Lide English III May 10, 2012 Importance of Emotion How love without heart?

Why fear death if given life today? A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others or any of the particular feelings that characterize such a state of mind, such as joy, anger, love, hate, horror, etc. define the word emotion. Tom Walker and his wife were said to be both meager, miserly people. Although they were husband and wife, a connection between the two may have been lost at sea. Miserly, meaning a lack of generosity, greatly defines how the couple showed no gratitude within their relationship. This absence of emotion, this stinginess may be the cause of death for both characters. Without any sense of emotion people are lifeless, enable to make sensible decisions, and permanently detached from the world. Whether or not they once loved, there should always remain an open heart for husband and wife. Anyone but he would have felt unwilling to linger in this lonely melancholy place, for the common people had a bad opinion of it from the stories handed down from the time of the Indian wars; when it was asserted that the savages held incantations here and made sacrifices to the evil spirit. Tom Walker, however, was not a man to be troubled with any fears of the kind. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand there is a time and place to be in certain situations. Though quite obvious this place had a bad reputation, Tom Walker had not cared one bit! Who staggers along in the evening through a dark path known for a series of death blows? Tom

Walker may have been a very wise man; however, his lack of emotion caused him to do things that were dangerous and life-threatening. His wife seemed to have been no better. At length she determined to drive the bargain on her own account, and if she succeeded, to keep all the gain to herself. Although Tom Walkers wife was described as tall termagant, fierce of temper, loud of tongue, and strong of arm she was no match for the supposedly devil. A powerful figure as such could tear her limb from limb and distribute her pieces throughout wildlife. She could not have possibly thought about this decision before leaving for those woods. Her lack of emotion drove her to put herself into a deadly situation she could never recover from. If there was love between their marriage, if there was fear of the devil, tragedy would not have struck between this families. He looked and beheld a bundle tied in a check apron and hanging in the branches of the tree; with a great vulture perched hard by, as if keeping watch upon it. He leaped with joy, for he recognized his wife's apron, and supposed it to contain the household valuables. Unconcerned for the well-being of his wife, Tom Walker cherishes his silver more than their love. Supposedly emotion can go both ways, either for people or nonliving material. However, in what life should silverware be placed above the joy of human company? Without emotions people can become detached from the things that really matter. The love of family, the joy of friendly gatherings, birth of a child, these are the things that become vague desirables when you are emotionless. One separates themselves from society by becoming in sync with themselves and forgetting that others matter. Jewels and riches are superb values but they are scarce and have high demand. Every man wants them for himself and will prevail over another just to be considered the best. Family, on the other hand, will always be here, therefore, needing to make it top priority, and without the harmony, no bond shall ever be formed.

The poor land jobber begged him to grant a few months indulgence. Tom had grown testy and irritated and refused another day. "My family will be ruined and brought upon the parish," said the land jobber. "Charity begins at home," replied Tom, "I must take care of myself in these hard times." Although possible Tom Walker may have been fed up and feeling angry his emotional state was in the wrong box. If Tom was experiencing rough times, which he was not this behavior would have been acceptable. Being that he is the richest man in the town his cowardly decision makes him heartless and dead. Always being angry or always being sad can turn the perfect life sluggish. It is important to place the correct emotion with the correct situation to avoid confusion and judgment. What living man denies the homeless a lick of his riches when he is capable of providing for the world? Only the dead can be so paralyzed of emotion, making them a burden to themselves. In final conclusion, without emotions people would become a complete wreck. Although you could never get hurt, you also will never get the true feeling of compassion or experience the simple feeling of happiness. Emotions are important because they bring people to life, help them make better choices and attach them to others. Tom Walker was driven away into thunder on a horse, because he was greedy and had no heart to care for others. His wife disappeared in the night and nothing but her heart and liver were found because she cared nothing of her husband and her stubbornness brought her death. Why be trapped within darkness and have no feelings? Why not love, sometimes anger, feels joy, be happy and express oneself. Emotions reveal the true side of people and this is the reason they are important.
