Statistics publishes data on basic education. The
data are the result of regular statistical survey on
basic education.

The Bulletin contains data on regular and

basic schools, as well as data on basic schools for
children with special needs, at the end and at the
beginning of the school year. Series for the Republic
cover five years, and data for municipalities refer to
the end of the school year 2007/2008 and the
beginning of the school year 2008/2009.

Education statistics objective is to present data

on condition, structure and development of schools
and classes, on structure and movement of pupils and
teachers, on results of education and factors that
affect the results. Education statistics tasks are
realised by collecting, processing and publishing of
data collected from all schools on the territory of
Republika Srpska.

Data on basic education, which have been

published in this Bulletin, are the result of regular
survey conducted at the end of the school year
2007/2008 - status after resits, and at the beginning
of the school year 2008/2009 - as of 25.09.2008.
Data collecting is done through forms:

Statistical activity covers all regular basic

schools, as well as basic schools for children with
special needs.
Definitions of the unit of observation
In education statistics, the unit of observation

is every regular basic school.

The unit of observation is also every basic

school for children with special needs, as well as
every class for handicapped children. Such special
classes are within regular schools.

The objective of basic education and

upbringing is acquiring general knowledge. Basic
education is realized in duration of eight years. As of
school year 2003/2004, basic education lasts nine
years.

School, in education statistics, is considered a group

of pupils organized in one school unit with one or
more teachers, who perform a certain kind of
teaching by a certain educational plan and
programme, irrespective of whether a school is
independent, regional unit or a unit within another
kind of school. Schools are also considered
territorially separated units within basic schools as
well as special classes within regular basic schools.

Class is a group of pupils, who are simultaneously

and in the same classroom, taught by one ore more
teachers successively, during one school year.

Considering the grades of which classes are consisted

of, they can be non-combined and combined. Noncombined class is a class that consists of pupils of
only one grade. Combined class is a class that
consists of pupils of two or more grades.

Grade is a level of education in which pupils, in a

certain time interval but no longer than one school
year, attain a certain extent of knowledge according
to educational plan and programme of a certain kind
of school.

Relations between a pupil, class and grade can be

different. Pupils of one grade can be allocated to two
or more classes (when one grade has more pupils
enrolled). One (combined) class can consist of pupils
of two ore more grades. One class can consist of
pupils of the same grade as well.
Full-time pupil is considered a person enrolled to

school with the aim to attend school.
Repeater (a pupil who repeats the grade) is a

pupil who enrols to a same grade two or more times.

Pupil instructed to repeat a grade is a pupil that

has got negative marks in three or more subjects at
the end of a school year (according to regulations for
that kind of school) or a pupil that does not pass a
resit at the end of the school year.
