Week 3: Focus on Maps and Climate

Lesson: Weather Vane Objective: At the end of this lesson students will know what a weather vane is, what it
is used for, and how to construct one. They will also continue to have the opportunity to predict the weather.

Content Standards:
Social Studies California State Content Standards: A childes place in time and space 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the 7 continents, and 4 oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols. 4. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Science California State Content Standards: Earth Science 3.Weather can be observed, measured, and described. a. Students know how to use simple tools (thermometer, wind vane, etc.) to measure weather conditions and record changes from day to day and across the seasons. Speaking and Listening: SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. a. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion. SL2: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. a. Give, re-state, and follow simple two-step directions. SL4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas, and feelings clearly. a. Memorize and recite poems, rhymes and songs with expression. SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. SL6: Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation. Technology Standards Addressed you can find the technology standards on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Website (http://www.iste.org) Technology standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative

products and processes using technology. b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression. d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities. 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works of solve problems. 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaborating, learning, and productivity. 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Student demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. Understood and use technology systems b. Select and use applications effectively and productively c. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies

Materials:
1. 2. 3. 4. ELMO Video clips (1 book reading and 1 instructional video) All weather vane materials Science journals

Instructional Directions:
1. Show the students the following clip which is a reading from the book Weather Weenies: The Little Breeze and the Weather Vane by Brenda Brown. http://youtu.be/TagGezN-MkM 2. Lead a whole class discussion about the reading and what they think a weather vane is and if it is useful. Use random selection to choose students to answer questions. 3. Tell the students that they are going to construct their own weather vanes and they will need to follow directions carefully. Use the following clip and stop after

each step to allow the students to complete each step. You will need to also be modeling by creating a weather vane as well. Here is the video clip on how to construct a weather vane. http://youtu.be/vLocxTAjNvY 4. Once the students have completed their weather vanes, have the class go outside and see how they work. Have the students bring their science journals outside to have them write down their weather prediction for tomorrow based on the evidence from their weather vane. 5. After about 10 minutes outside have the students come inside to vote for tomorrows weather prediction based on their weather vane findings. Do the same chart on the board with tally marks to come up with the winning prediction.
