William Tecumseh Sherman, although not a career military commander before the war, would become one of "the most widely renowned of the Unions military leaders next to U. S. Grant. i!e Grant, he graduated from the military academy at West "oint. i!e Grant, he failed as a businessman. i!e Grant, he was critici#ed as an incom$etent officer. %nd li!e Grant, he became a fierce, uncom$romising warrior who hel$ed batter the &onfederates into submission during the &i'il War. (e ser'ed briefly as the head of a military academy in ouisiana, but when the &i'il War bro!e out, he )oined the U.S. %rmy as a colonel. Sherman fought at the *irst +attle of +ull ,un- +attle of *irst .anassas, /irginia, in which Union troo$s were beaten badly by the &onfederate %rmy. Sent to 0entuc!y to command troo$s there, he did $oorly. (is numerous re1uests for reinforcements and his generally ner'ous beha'ior caused some news$a$ers to describe him as insane. +ut with the su$$ort of a new commander, Ulysses S. Grant, Sherman found confidence. %t /ic!sburg, .ississi$$i, Sherman hel$ed win Grant one of the greatest 'ictories of the war, brea!ing the &onfederates2 gri$ on the .ississi$$i ,i'er. When Grant was a$$ointed commander of the entire Union %rmy and went east to Washington, he left Sherman as commander of the three armies of the .ississi$$i military di'ision. 3n Se$tember, Sherman too! %tlanta, and burned the military resources and many of the buildings there. (e then began his "march to the sea," in which he ca$tured Sa'annah and turned his armies northward. Sherman2s men fought through South &arolina, and on into 4orth &arolina, laying waste to not only military su$$lies, bridges, and railroads, but homes, farms, and li'estoc!. +y the time the &onfederacy surrendered on %$ril 5, 6789, Sherman had reached ,aleigh, 4orth &arolina, lea'ing destruction in his wa!e.
