Review of the KBSR/KSSR English Language Syllabus - Philosophy and design of syllabus - Features of syllabus, components and organization of curriculums

A document which consists of a list that specifies all the things that are to be taught in the course(s).

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF A SYLLABUS


1. Consists of a comprehensive list of: content items (words, structures, topics) process items (tasks, method) The former is more common

2. The items are ordered, usually having components that are considered easier or more essential earlier, and more difficult and less important ones later.
3. Generally have explicit objectives, usually declared at the beginning of the document

4. It is a public document Available for scrutiny by : the teachers, the consumers (the learners or their parents), representatives of the relevant of the authorities (inspectors, school boards), other interested members of the public (textbook writers, teacher trainers, researchers)

5. Particular preferred approach or methodology to be used may also be defined. May list recommended materials (coursebooks , visual materials or supplementary materials) 6. May indicate a time schedule Some syllabi delimit the time framework of their components, for example, these items should be dealt with in the first month those in the second

PHILOSOPHY AND DESIGN OF SYLLABUS (KBSR)


English is taught in keeping with its status as a second language in country. The cabinet committee report on the review of the implementation of the education policy 1979teaching of English is to enable learners to use English in everyday situation and work situation as well as to pursue higher education.

The English curriculum is designed to provide learners with a strong foundation in the language. Learners will then be able to build upon this foundation and use it for various purposes.

The development of learners linguistic ability is in keeping with the goals with the National Education Philosophy and the Education Act of 1996 which seek to optimize the intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical potential of all student.

learners are taught the fundamental of English grammar and how to use it correctly in both speech and writingEnglish sound system to enable them to pronounce word correctly and to speak fluently with the correct and intonationlearn to speak internationally intelligible English

English syllabus for primary schools gives an overview of the English language curriculum to be taught from Year 1 through the Year 6. To help teachers teach this curriculum in the classroom, supporting documents known as syllabus specifications or Huraian Sukatan Pelajaran are made available.

In these documents, the curriculum is explained in greater detail for each year of schooling.

PHILOSOPHY AND DESIGN OF SYLLABUS (KSSR)


English is taught as a second language in all Malaysian primary and secondary schools . The goal of the English language curriculum is to help pupils acquire the language in order to help them use it in their daily lives, to further their studies, and for work purposes .

This curriculum stresses the development of critical literacy. - Teachers will provide opportunities for pupils to question and evaluate texts that they listen to, read or view. - These opportunities are essential for achieving personal growth and confidence in functioning as an effective and productive member of our society. - This is in line with the goals of the National Philosophy of Education which seeks to optimise the intellectual, emotional and spiritual potential of pupils.
