Essential Questions: How does knowing how to write letters help me share my thoughts with others? Learning Objectives: Students will be able to... Understand key vocabulary Develop fine motor skills Print many letters of the alphabet Participate in collaborative conversations using describing words Materials and Preparation Pencils and crayons Computer with internet access and projection capability The TV Teacher Handwriting videos (Ms. Marney) SMART board handwriting paper screen IPad Apps - TeachMe: Kindergarten (also has sight words & numbers to practice writing, spelling and feedback given by Mimi Mouse handwriting tutor) -Handwriting 1 (also has vocabulary) -Handwriting 2 (strictly forming letters) Prior Knowledge: Ask students if they can already write their name and/or letters. Discussion Points: Discuss how knowing how to write letters will help them be able to share their thoughts. Demonstrate and practice the proper handwriting grip using chompers. Instructional Strategies:

Opening Activity: Ms. Marney handwriting videos Lessons on each letter of the alphabet both uppercase and lowercase with beginning sounds and words that begin with each letter.

Practice Activity: SMART board The teacher will model how to form the correct letter of the day. The students will be called to the Smart board to practice letter formation before using their pencils and papers at their seats. Practice Activity: Educational Apps on Ipads for Academic Centers The teacher will group students according to how many Ipads are available for checkout each day (some will continue to use the Smart board if there arent enough Ipads). Students will share the Ipads and practice letter formation skills using the Apps listed in the materials section above. Enrichment Activity: Component Sounds Students who master letter writing will work on identifying component sounds through the use of other educational apps: - Beginning Sounds Interactive Game - Build a Word - Easy Spelling with Phonics -Other teacher choices available (here) Assessment Activity: The students will complete a handwriting test at the end of the week to see which letters they can correctly form and which students need extra remediation with fine motor skills and letter formation. Note: Some of the apps allow you to monitor student progress. Make sure students log off when changing partners.
